Default 4th to 5th gear grind at high RPMs

If I'm traveling at 75mph and drop it down to 4th gear and then into 5th I get this annoying grind when I'm pushing from 4th gear into 5th gear. It does not happen at lower RPMs, only at higher RPMs. Synchro's?

What's going on here? I have a 1998 GS-R with 50K miles.

Thanks.

YUP! 4th Gear synchro!

I had the same problem with my 3rd gear synchro on my 92 Si hatch (D16z6). It was $750 cdn to fix it - basically a tranny rebuild (unless you know trannys well enough to dismantle it completely and reassemble yourself)....so I just swapped in a new y8 engine WITH a y8 tranny for $1100 cdn.

now I'm selling my z6 tranny for $100. (with the 3rd gear synchro worn) to a guy who CAN do the labour himself. The synchro gear itself is cheap, but the labour is intensive.

Good Luck!

Holy crap. That's a ton of dough to spend on this car. No offense to the H loyalists, but I'm not about to spend that much money on this car. This sucks. I should have taken more into consideration when the previous owner told me his g/f spent some time behind the wheel when she was learning to drive stick.

Synchro gears get worn when you do alot of fast, high-rpm shifting, with only a partly engaged clutch....

So going with a racing type of clutch (if I would decide to rebuild) would be the best option. Because, I can assure you the clutch is to the floor.

I noticed with my car I can't go from WOT in 2nd or 3rd gear and then directly to 5th without it(5th) grinding. However, if I go through all the remaining gears, its fine.

well ya a racing clutch would help. sol longs the clutch IS all the way engaged when you shift. Doesn't matter what KIND of clutch you have.

And yeah when YOU drive it,, the clutch IS probably all the way down, but for the first 1000,000kms when someone was "learning" is what most likely wore it down.... :D

Temporary fix is good enough for me if I can get by for a few more months (read: new car).

Actually, I've been using synchromesh for some months now, and my problem has been completely eliminated. I've yet to have a recurrance of my 3rd and 5th gear grinding problems.

Wow. only 25 miles and the difference is like night and day. I hadn't a clue this stuff would make such a dramatic difference.

Bye-bye 5th gear grind.

I HIGHLY recommend GM Synchromesh.

Before you repair anything I would replace the transmission fluid.

I would suggest Redline MTL or MT-90 (not sure which one for the 'tegs, they can tell you) I had the same problem with 3rd gear in my 300zx (as just about all do) and it smoothed it out perfectly...

Dude, it's a GS-R with 50k! It's worth some cash. It sucks that the synchro is worn, but on the other hand you have an excuse to get an ITR tranny.

I hope you gote a good price on it, though...

Actually, patience is key to my problem. You have to let the GM Synchromesh take its time to do it's magic. I've had about 1,000 miles on my car since the switch to Synchromesh, and everything operates to specs. I have no more 4th to 5th gear grinds whatsoever. Like I said, patience is key. You can't expect to dump in the new Synchromesh and cure the problem instantly. The car needs a few hundred/thousand miles until the problem is cured.
