You have given no information that will help diagnose this problem. Does it do it while sitting? While running hard? Randomly? Slowly happen? Quickly happen? Why do you want to replace the water pump? is it loosing coolant?

I've fixed an awful lot of cars and only one had a water pump that caused the overheating(not due to a leak, but actual low flow). The car had a yard motor in it and the blades had somehow rusted to pieces. Yet by some miracle, the bearings and seals were still good on the pump.

If it only does it while sitting at idle that is usually a sign of defective fans or a defective thermo switch.

u need to check at what tempature the thermostat opens at and then put a thermomiter in there at the same time and make sure it opens at that temp. check your fans.

it does it at idle, it does it all the time, after the car wrms up it will over heat, i figure water pump is bad, it is not leaking coolant around it, i have noticed that the lower rad hose does not get hot so i fig the thermo was stuck so i took the whole thing out and same result, i poured water through upper rad hose and it will flow out where thermo is, but when i start the car no coolant goes through lower rad hose.
is this enough info any other questions?

i would think, if its a bad waterpump it would overheat ALL the time(both idling and driving) check if your fans working, bleed coolant system again.

any white smoke out of your exhaust?

fan is working , why wouldnt coolant flow through the lower rad hose , the only it seems like it wouldn't is that the pump is not pushing water out, that why i think it s water pump, but really dont wnat to do that till i check everything else. do u bleed it from the upper hose , i seen i little thing thats looks like a bleeder valve.

im not sure if its on your motor, but ontop of the upper radiator host, where it connects to the head, theres a bleeder bolt.

or, just warm the car up with the cap off, wait until the fan turns on and top it off with coolant. oh, and turn your heater on too. so it can cycle through the heat exchanger.

How do you know there is no coolant going through the lower hose while the car is on? With the thermostat out, all hoses on the car, you should be able to see some flow through the radiator, but it is very hard to see, if not impossible to see, if the radiator is completely full.(water flows from the lower hose, to the water pump, through the upper hose, and back down through the lower hose.)

Also, how do you know the car is actually overheating? Have you used a mechanical guage? temp probe?

Possibilities include:

Thermostat
- You said you boiled it, I would try and take it out completely and see what happens

Radiator
-Might need to be replaced

Headgasket
-Do a compression test. Might have a blown headgasket. Happened to me

Fans
-You said you checked these.

These are all i can think of. Hope this helps

My car is overheating at idle as well. I have to refill my radiator about every 3-5 days. Could that be a blown headgasket still? Would the car still feel just as powerful as before?

i know no coolant is going through because the lower hose is not getting hot and i cant feel anything. i thought coolant flows from block through the thermo and get cooled off by rad then through the upper hose.i know its overheating because my gauge slowly goes up. ppls that are asking if its blowing white smoke out the exhaust , is it real noticeable, it somes a little when first stared then after few minutes no smoke , but i figured it would smoke a little bit since its cold outside, come fellow h-t , surely someone knows what is wrong, i have been to advance auto , 2 auto shops and asked all my friends yet no answer, i quess i will try to change water pump sun , if no one has a solution, i just need to sve up and get a b16 swap, im so frustrated, i go to school 8-11 then work 12-9 everyday. need to get it running

i dont think rad is block , i can pour coolant in a it will come out of bottom of rad, could the pump lose it fins , it s metal where would it go?
So does coolant flow from head through thermo, then rad then through upper then back to block or other way around?

I had the same problem.

I agree I would check these areas.

1. Fan(is it running when it gets warm) Also is if you have taken it out for any reason did yo put it back in so that it blows the heat off the engine? Seems silly but I know a lot of people who have doen it.
2. Fan switch. I tested mine by un plugging it and bending a paper clip to so call "Hot wire" it. Put the ends of the clip into the plug, if the fan comes on then yuor switch is fine.
3. Hoses for hair line cracks or anything
4. Radiator for cracks, if its plastic its a very big possibility.
5. Water pump
6 Head gasket.

I had the same symptoms and replaced these parts and finally got my over heating problem fixed. It boiled down to the head gasket since it hasnt over heated since then.

Hope this helps.

okay I figured out that the fan is causing my overheating at idle problem. The fan does not come on at all. So to fix it do I have to buy another fan, or is it something else i can replace like a switch or something? Sorry, I really have no clue how that works. Any help is appreciated
