Default How To: Wiring VTEC into an EG non-Si Civic (that's not a 92) OBD1 w/p28

So you've just swapped a SOHC VTEC motor into your EG (CX,VX,DX, whatever).
Now, just wire up the VTEC spool solenoid and Pressure switch to clear those CEL's. (assuming you are good to go as far as O2 sensors)

The PIC below is the upper connector on your passenger side shock tower under your hood. Now, assuming the VTEC motor you just swapped in came with the engine harness intact, the 2 spots I am pointing to should not be plugged.

It should now look like this:

So, the upper Green/yellow wire is the VTEC spool solenoid, and the lower Blue/black is the pressure switch

Now you need to run wires from your stock ECU harness to the back of that plug where they are still blank.

If your EG is a 92, the work has been done for you and you need nothing more. However if yours is 93 up and not an EX/Si you will need to salvage 2 pins from a junked harness and 2 from a junked plug.

Try to pull the pins from the harness and plug with atleast 2 to 3 inches of the wire still on those pins for ease of splicing. On the "parts" harness, undo the "keeper clip" that folds down securing the pin seats in place, use a needle or a pin puller to release the pins from positions A4 and D6.

Plug those into your harness in the perspective locations, splice enough wire to run to the shock harness.

Now, salvage two of the pins from the plug harness and those go to the blank spots on your car. Make sure that the one that has the Green/yellow wire on the engine side mates with the wire you ran from A4 on the firewall side, and the Blue/black with the D6 wire.

Simple enough right! Good luck and I hope this helps!!!

Well, using a P28, you cannot use it. Good Fortune I'd say. Now, say you NEED one for some reason, use a p30 or similar and hardwire from the ECU to the Sensor.

well i hope your right...and i hope that all "92s" are prewired for vtec. Because i just swapped in a d15b into my 1992 cx w/ a z6 harness p28 ecu. Hopefully vtec will work.

This helped a lot! Thanks Arizona.

What about using a PR3? I'm still throwing a cel #23. The only thing is I'm using a 94 Del Sol Dohc Vtec Engine Wire Harness but still have the 93 Civic Cabin harness. The color of the knock wire is Yellow w/red stripe and the MAP sensor has that color as well. You can't really follow the color to the plug because one leads the plug on the passenger side and the other leads to the plug on the driver side.

My Vtec is good!

I'm trying to bring out the techies here, but I appreciate all input and suggestions!

Thanks!

AWESOME POST! I jsut did this and it cleared my check engine lights. I can't feel the vtec AT ALL, so this poses 2 questions.

1.)Why can't I feel the VTEC? How can I check this? (my buddy car is the same motor and i can feel it) NO CELS visible.

2.) My cx had a one wire 02 sensor, and now a 4 wire w/ the Z6. I didn't rewire anything and there is no CEL. Is this something I need to do or can affect performance?
