Default A few JDM final drive questions

1) I see that when you order a JDM final drive it comes with the final drive, the main shaft and 1st gear. Why first gear? I know why you get a new mainshaft but first gear i dont.
2) I would like to put an LS 5th gear on it also. Now I see a LS 5th gear set on godspeeds site and it comes with a mainshaft and countershaft. Will these work with the JDM final drive. I know I'll need the mainshaft that comes with the final drive, but what about the countershaft that comes with the LS 5th?
3) What do i need to buy (little parts) that need to be replaced once i change the final drive? I know i need a case gasket and lock nuts for the top of the main & counter shafts. Anything else? I was reading the manual and it said something about lock bolts that need to be replaced.
4) What else is needed to do the job? I know i need a press, bearing puller (if i pull any bearings, but i dont think i will have to), but what about assembly lube, grease and what not?
5) Also what about shims? I know I need to shim it to proper clearance, but should i buy a set of shims so i am prepared?

Thanks for the help.

1) I see that when you order a JDM final drive it comes with the final drive, the main shaft and 1st gear. Why first gear? I know why you get a new mainshaft but first gear i dont.

The first gear is there because the opening on it is different diameter. The teeth and gear ratio are exactly the same.

Yes it will work fine. GSR gear will also work fine and is recommended over the LS.

3) What do i need to buy (little parts) that need to be replaced once i change the final drive? I know i need a case gasket and lock nuts for the top of the main & counter shafts. Anything else? I was reading the manual and it said something about lock bolts that need to be replaced.

Case gasket is just liquid sealant. Follow Helms manual and it should be all pretty simple.

4) What else is needed to do the job? I know i need a press, bearing puller (if i pull any bearings, but i dont think i will have to), but what about assembly lube, grease and what not?

Again, follow Helms manual.

5) Also what about shims? I know I need to shim it to proper clearance, but should i buy a set of shims so i am prepared?

Only need to reshim if you have changed the differential itself. When doing so also replace dif bearings.

why would you recommend the GSR over the LS, I thought that the LS would yield slightly lower RPM's for highway driving

It's the counter shaft it come with, not the main shaft:

Because the GSR 5th gear and the JDM 4.785 FD mathmatically equal the same as a Stock ITR. The LS would drop it even lower so there would be a large gap between 4th and 5th, dropping the RPMS lower than desired at redline shifts. However the LS 5th would allow you to get much better gas mileage.

I have the JDM final drive and I left all the gears stock ITR and I still get 25mpg driving at 80mph give or take.

yeah, but if you shift around 4500 to 5000 RPM's from 4th to 5th, even w/ the LS, it should only take you to around what 3300-3500? that's not too bad, but I want to be at least a little lower than stock...

speed limit in FL in most places here is 70, I'm always doing at least 80-85...

lower RPM's =better

thanks for the info though...

I was thinking for redline shifts from 4th to 5th. We have a 3000ft straight-away at Grattan Raceway here in Michigan so 5th is a must on the track.

Since I am not replacing the diff, I don't need to shim it huh? Thats good. I re read the manual last night and made a list fo parts that I think are needed. I'll post the parts and part numbers once I get everything for anybody else interested in doing the change themself.

As for the 5th gear, I think the LS 5th you only loose about 300 rpms (ie normal would be 4800, LS would be 4500), so i don't think its that big of a deal is it?

300rpm in 5th gear are about +10kpH top speed

What about the Spoon final drive 4.643? Anybody has it?
