Default Custom exhaust or aftermarket exhaust and why???

Just like the thread title says, all factors being considered...

Im the farthest thing from a rice boy and will almost never run any name brand over priced crap that I can outdo at half the price... I was in a debate with a few people that are new to the scene and think if its not Apex or some other name brand than its garbage and will make less power...

So everyone, please let your opinions on this matter fly...

in the end....piping is piping.
IMO most aftermarket exhausts are just bling.
hell, the jdm itr exhaust is like 2.36 ID, is it not?
if you're not worried about the sound..straight pipe it.

other than that..i'm sure you've heard of kteller8 ...
maybe even smsp will chime in.

IMO custom is always best.

It's all in the specs/dimensions, not the brand names. All that matters is having the proper size (OD). And utilize straight-through mufflers/resonators.

All those aftermarket companies advertise "research and design". Gee, they all generally use the same tubing OD size, (usually 60-60.5mm for JDM, and 2.25" for USDM), same bends. How much different can there be between them, performance-wise?

i say custom. most of the exhausts out there are too ****** small. 2 1/4 doesnt cut it. the 2 1/2" exhausts are usually ugly. id get the best of both worlds, 2 1/2" piping with a muffler of my choice. my exhaust is made out of 2 1/2 INNER diameter tubing we use at my job. where exhaust tubing is rated for outter diameter.

just curious. what better gains is it going from a 2.25 to 2.5 custom piping anyways? should i be worried about backpressure?

When the Tanabe RM first came out like 5 years ago, I was so disappointed when I recieved it. The piping diameter wasn't what I expected. The so called "bottle-neck" right after the cat was design with the ID of the stock CAT. The only fix to this was to cut off and re-do a piping the samesize of the rest.

Since then, I"ve used customs setups in the past, Kteller8 is what I've used in the past.

Another example, a customer of mine in a '95 GSR, had the same type of exhaust. His setup was just a Jackson blower with the Tanabe RM exhaust. He switch it to a Greddy SP (piping was a slight difference) and made an additional 6hp over his old Tanabe. On top, it was alot quiter.

I guess it boils down to what engine likes to breath out the most.

I think the burden of proof should lie on those saying you need backpressure. It makes no sense.

Exhaust velocity, yes. Backpressure, no.

Oh yeah - put me down for custom. Mostly because you can't find a 2.5" OD straight-through system that uses more than one resonator. Personally, I'm going to be using 3 (a resonated cat, a standard resonator, and a moroso spiral flow).

Well, of course it exists . . . . I assumed you were making some attempt to read between the lines.

The point GsR HtCh was obviously trying to make was that backpressure being good for performance was a myth, not that backpressure doesn't physically exist.

of course it does, too much back pressure=bad, too little or no back pressure=bad too, it take little bit of back pressure to draw the rest of the gas out, smoothly.

i got 2.5pipe 22inch resonator with free flow muffler, all custom

In case you missed it, for an N/A exhaust system you want ZERO backpressure, but high exhaust velocity.

My thoughts:

Custom - Allows for bigger piping and getting rid of the pre-mufflers that most aftermarket systems have which will give less back pressure. Lets you choose the muffler style you want. But there is a lot more hassle with having the piping bent, welding on the hangers and muffler, etc. I've heard some "custom" exhaust and some sound really loud, raspy, and like complete crap.

Aftermarket - Great sound and all you have to do is drop you old exhaust and bolt up the new one. No hassles and some companies like Thermal offer an all stainless steel system for not a lot of money. Only drawback is the smaller size and more backpressure. Screw the bling bling brands like Mugen or Spoon unless its some show car.

Quote from Import Review "Just because its a a huge Japanese name, doesn't mean its great. Buy what performs well, not by brand name."

it all depends on the person, IMO

some people will sit and live by their name brand.. its xxx so its good and will preform..

while others will go and do it themself, go custom, and are extremly happy..

if you got the resources and availabilty, why not go custom.. at times it cheaper..

if your more of a bolt up , and run *lazy * kinda guy.. then go with an aftermarket system

only reason id ever suggest aftermarket, is if it was a totally different design, side exit or something that you could get done with a prefab custom kit.. well you could. but ya know what i mean

might want to pick up a 2.5" Muffler to fit that piping
