Default does anyone run aftermarket pullies on turbo?

i wasnt sure if anyone used aftermarket pullies or not with a turbo kit, like the UR pullies. a friend of mine said that it would slow the belts down, but i dont know. on modacar it says that the UR will actually add more hp on the forced induction setups. let me know what you guys think.

I have heard about people blowing up oil pumps because of UR crank pulleys because it throws the balance of your crankshaft off. I would just run a stock crank pulley but the other pulleys I don't think really matter.

Unless you want you want your motor to go prematurely dont run an aftermaket pulley. Your crank pulley, or Harmonic balancer is used to damen the vibrations in your engine. Honda does a pretty good job if you are still on stock bottem end. Basically your harmonic balancer is tuned for the componets that your stock motor has. If you change your rods and pistons out you are actually changing the harmonics once again and your OEM pulley isnt going to do what it was made to do. If you learn anything from this post take this with you, Vibrations kill engines!!

The way out of this is either an ATI or Fluidamper harmonic damper that is made for all frequecies..

The CTR N1 crank pulley is made by honda, and is popular, I'm not sure how it stacks up against Arturbo's information, just adding my two cents.

I upgraded the pullies on my turbo and it spools a lot faster now...

Arturbo -- I'm planning on upgrading my internals, so if I run a Fluidamper/ATI harmonic damper, can I run an UR crank pulley or any other aftermarket crank pulley, or should I still stay with the stock pulley? Thanks.

Stock is your best bet for what you have. Just dont go with an UR pulley. If you can afford it get an ATI or Fluidamper.

I would definitely follow Arturbo's advice. The last thing you want to do is create more vibration just for the sake of a few extra hp (which you can make up by turning up the boost 1 psi). Play it safe.

Honeslty once your boosted the power is there, we dont need pulley kits to make power, boost makes power. Most poeple that are turbo dont waste thier $ on that stuff because money can be better spent . IVe heard to many horror stories about these to even consider a mod worth a couple hp, IMO just turn the boost up!!!!!

I hate to break it to you non believers re: pulley sets. I have a complete UR pulley set on my turbocharged D16Y8 since Oct. 14/01 at 114700 km (71271.25miles) my car now has 181000 kms (112468.2 miles). Unless you are a leading physicist in harmonics, you have no idea what you are talking about. If pulley kits have caused so much damage I would question the ability of the installer, or the status of the engine pre pulley install. Unorthodox provides faq re: pulleys. It may be propoganda, but its quite informative. Do a Google search on light weight pulleys. You'd be surprised at what you find.

I see what you're saying, but I still think it's a waste of money when I can simply turn my mbc for free.

rev that MONSTER D16 to about 9,000 and see how good that POS UR pulley works for you....you oil pump will be in pieces before you know it.

i had one on my ls/vtec turbo (yes it was fulley balanced) and the oil pump blew apart as soon as i got the right ecu in it for the vtec..reving it to 8500-9,000..no more than 3,000 miles on it did the pump take a ****.

before it had the vtec head on it, i had gone for about 10,000-15,000 miles with no problems.

Your biggest mistake is revving the D16 to 9k.. regardless of what pulley you have

Bingo, pullies just arent a cost efficient mod when boosted.

i see what you guys are saying, it wouldnt be very cost efficient when you could just spend the money elsewhere.

Are the ATI and Fluidamper only dampeners, or are they pullies too? Now I'm really confused, as I thought that the ATI and Fluidamper were only dampeners that worked in conjunction with other pullies. Can someone set me straight?

For the record, I ran a CTR crank pulley on my motor.
2 weeks later, oil pump gear shattered.
Replaced oil pump gear.
Month later, shattered.

Went back to stock GSR pulley.
5 months later and 80 hp more not a single problem. (except for that whole broken ringland thing)

Take it for what you will.
