Default **** help me pick .... 26x11x3 or 26x6x3.5 FMIC

http://www.precisionturbo.net/...olers

Here are a few EF pictures so you can get and idea of how much open space there is on the OEM and WW front bumper. Keep in mind I would like to get a FMIC that fills up most of the grill space with I measured at 31inch by 5.5inch

In that link I'm thinking about getting that FMIC. Its 26 x 6.3 x 3.5inches. It states it can support up to 350whp. I have a 90 civic hb si , b18c & WW kit. Here are my questions:

1) Because it's only 6.3inches high would could i still keep my OEM front bumber bar? Cause I know a lot of people just take them off.

2) does anyone have detailed pix of any FMIC on ef?
Pix with & w/out bumber would be nice. I really like to see a side shot of it from the fender view so i know how far back it sits or where it mounts up to.

3) Do you think this FMIC would be ideal for 300whp less setups and perfect figment on the ef? I think so. Also some people are telling me to go with TALLER FMIC like 10 to 11inches at least. The way i look at it is:
a) the taller it is the less air will reach my radiator and could possibly do more damage then good.
b) even though a 26x11x3 has more cooling area surface vs 26x6x3.5 ...................... it only has "X" amount of space air can hit it with a normal bumber opening like OEM or WW kit.
c) It would be more effiecent to have a thicker core where air hits than a thiner core with 5+ inches of extra area surface that is not exposed to air flow passage CORRECT?

please help me understand what would be more functional.
TIA

my understanding is that increasing the depth of an IC has deminishing gains. As the ambiant air passes over the front portion, say the first 50%, it absorbs the heat out of the alu fins. Over the last 50% the ambiant air is already heated a bit so it only pulls out 1/4 the ammout of heat from the last half as it did from the first.

also the thicker core lets less air to pass through because of the serodynamic resistance. frontal surface area increases yeild much bigger gains in efficiency than increasing depth. hope that helps a little.

hum I never really though about that.. Thanks any more thoughs?

BTW greddy type31 was my 1st choice but NEW is $600-630 it is "tube-fin" style vs BAR-fin like percision IC. The type31 is about the same size only 1inch taller and -1/2inch thicker. Also Precision IC is only $345shipped.

Well IMO 11 inches it too tall, and probabaly more than you need for a simple setup. Also you'll probabaly have to ditch the bumper support and rig up some custom brackets for the tall intercooler. On the integra, mine fit perfectly with the bumper support. The precision intercooler your looking at has some tabs on the top right corners, I had tony1 weld a 4x4 peice of aluminum to them horizontally. Then i drilled some holes thru bumper support and the 4x4 aluminuim piece and use some big *** bolts, lock washer and walla

Ill try to get those pics up tomorrow night

why do you say that. For my ef it will only see 250-280 and maybe 300whp at max. I need to find a FMIC that fits best, not over kill for my setup goals.

bigger is not aways better. If i want to make more than 300whp it will be in a eg or ek.

Charlie, Don't get a FMIC. Buy a sidemount and let it flow openly since you've got a vented body kit. You live in St. Paul, and your car WILL get stolen. It's a FACT man.

That's why I'm sticking with my sidemount for now.

I think too big of a front mount for your application would slow down spool time. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah for sure I know what you mean. My EF is always in storage. I only drive it like in the summer sometimes and thats like 1-3 times a month. hell no on knows I have it. If I do get a FMIC i will definaly be bolted on hella tightly with no way of taking it out unless you jack the car up.... i got some ideas. SMIC is cool, I totally understand that it will work for my needs as a tempoary cooling system but in the long run I'd like to get a FMIC ya know.

Also the bigger the FIMC you will notice a drop in psi so you simply correct that my turning up the boost .5psi to 1.5psi. I understand that, so that is why i'm trying to find the best effective FMIC for my needs and at a reasonable price

bigger ICs don't always cause more of a pressure drop than small ones. The core and endtank design have more to do with it than core size. The draw back to having too big of an intercooler (besides theft and fit) is that you are unnecessarily increasing the internal volume of the charge system. This will cause a delay in boost rise but not necessarily a drop in PSI.

there are so many compromises in IC design, it's hard to figure out especially when every other person says 'just get the biggest one dude'

If you use a bumper bar from a CRX HF you should be able to use a much larger core.

WTF? please explaine?.... will it simply bolt up? to my ef?

I'm thinking of possibly getting a 31 x 8 x 3.5 (might not but just a thought and only $60 more an capable of 600hp vs 350hp

hmm, didnt notice you had a hatch, just looked at the first pic, it bolts up to any crx, not sure about hatches, but the hf bar is anemic compared to all the others.

Either one will be fine for 300 hp. The taller one is more efficient but it may affect radiator cooling more. I have one similar to the 6 inch tall one you described and im guessing its going to be fine past 400 hp for me. I would get the one that bolts up easier to your bumper unless you plan to cut some of the bumper support out then you can go taller. If I could do it all over again I would have gotten a taller intercooler cause when I got it I wasnt planning as much boost as I am now. Also 26 inches is pretty long make sure you have enough room for the endtanks and pipes.

charlie...get a pretty big intercooler!! trust me bro...during the summer...a small intercooler will do **** for you considering the humidity and heat we have here!! look at how big my FMIC is. it's longer and taller than it is wide. it's only 2.5" wide but about 41" long and 10" high. plus it looks sexy!!

i would say to get the next size up from precision (31x8x3.5) for only a small amount more money, you will never have to upgrade. thats exactly what i did.

so what are you saying Sherman?.... do you have any problems with cooling system with you radiator bro? ... haha if I really wanted to look sexy and hella tight I would of gotten an APEXI SKYLINE GT fmic with that Nos spray thinga-ma'bobber.

now I'm not sure what to get as in dollar to value/performance:
26 x 6.3 x 3.5.........$250
31 x 8 x 31.5..........$380

get teh taller IC...the air will cool better. The longer it is, the more pressure drop you'll have. Go with a 20x10x3 or 20x8x3 for lower power goals.

LOL, no i have no cooling problems what-so-ever. my temp heats up real quick but only goes till a little over 1/4 and just stays there. be sure to get a dual core civic rad...or better yet, get an aluminum rad to help out.

My friend is running a similar setup as you. and he's looking to get about the same amount of power as you. So we went to a local turbo specialist where we live and he told us that for the amount of power your wanting. a IC with about 700cfm is about right. you can go a little bit bigger but like someone stated earlier. your spool up time might be delayed a Little. good luck with your car.
