got fix-it ticket for my exhaust in CA.... some questions
alright, so as the topic says, i got a fix-it ticket
what i have: a'pexi n1 w/ jdm itr 4-1 header and carsound cat (2.5")
here are the questions... and yes, i have searched
will i be receiving a citation in the mail? if not, how do i know how much to pay and where to send payment?
where can i have this inspected at? do i have to go to the location that is written on the front of the ticket? or can i just go to any police station for the write off?
the ticket says "loud exhaust." can i pop the n1 silencer in there and have it inspected and signed off?
if i can't just go the silencer route, will the the stock muffler bolt on to the piping of the n1? if so, will the greatly reduce the sound? if i can do this, i will.
and lastly, will they only check for the written up violations (in this case, "loud exhaust") and nothing else?
sorry for all the questions, but if some of you can give me definate answers, i would greatly appreciate the help.
thanks in advance.

I do believe approx 2 yrs ago Jan 1st 2002 they no longer allowed the exhaust as a fix-it-ticket.. I believe it is an actual Violation and you will have to pay a pymt of up to $75+ dollars +you'll need it signed off only after you pay for the ticket.. or you can fight the ticket..in which you go to court and lose a fighting battle against a judge that really doesn't care about your exhaust..good luck..but you may want to check maybe they changed it backto a fix it ticket

If he gave you a ticket then expect to receive payment instructions in the mail in about two weeks. It'll say how much to pay, where to send payment, etc. If it's a fix-it ticket and not an actual violation, you can go to any CHP station and have an officer go to your car so you can show him/her you fixed the problem. (Go inside, and tell an officer you need to get a fix-it ticket signed off.)
If he/she believes it's fixed, he'll/she'll sign off the ticket, and you show up to court (the letter you get in the mail should have an address of a court you can go to) and tell the judge the problem's fixed. If he/she is like the one I had, he'll just say, "Yeah, that's nice" and let you go.
You still have to pay like $10 at the court cashier, though. If you can't get it signed off by anyone, then you'll have to pay the fine of however much it says on the letter.
My friend got a fix-it ticket for a loud exhaust on his SC'ed 4Runner. When the CHP cop went outside, he told him to rev the engine. My friend just revved it really slowly up to like 3500 rpm, so the volume was really quiet. It worked for him.

hmm... on the ticket, there's a section that says "Correctable Violation" and on the boxes below, set of boxes that is next to my violation is checked yes. so i'm assuming it is a fix it ticket? and not a total violation? how much will i have to pay to get away with this?
oh yeah, i put the silencer on my muffler. will this allow me to pass the inspection? it really does make a difference in sound
thanks

Yeah, if it's correctable then it's a fix-it ticket. To get it signed off, it's free. When you show up to the court with your signed ticket--to prove you fixed the problem so you won't have to pay a fine--you'll be instructed to pay a $10 processing fee or some **** like that. I believe I fixed the problem, got it signed off at nearby CHP station the same day I received the ticket, and then waited until a letter came that told me which court to show up at. I showed the judge my ticket and then paid $10. The silencer should help, but it's really at the discretion of the officer who comes out to sign off your ticket. He might be a hard-*** and say it's still not quiet enough.

just put the silencer on and get it written off at a highschool.. cops there dont get to really deal with traffic..so they can care less. if u got the stock exaust..put it back on if the first idea does not work.. it is 10 bucks to process..
if those boxes are checked, then it's a "correctable" violation...
the 15 between Qualcomm and 52 seems to be a hotspot for getting pulled over. You're the 4th person i've heard about getting some sort of ticket/fix ticket on that stretch of freeway within the past 2 months...in one case, they sent my friend to the ref for his motor swap...and he initially got pulled over for being too low, which in fact his car is 2 inches above the legal limit...i see a pattern forming...or are they patrolling that area more frequently cuz you have to take that way to the stadium for the legal races held there...hmmm

thanks for all the replies.
but now i have a new question concerning this.
i've been hearing from some people that they enforced a new law stating that exhausts are no longer considered fix-it-tickets. which in turn, would result in me being sent to a CA ref. is this law still in effect? or has it been turned back to a regular fix-it-ticket?
does anyone know the answer to this? i'm really concerned right now.

hey boys... hate to break it to you but our fix it tickets are no longer so easy to "fix"...
got a fix it ticket, went to the local station to have it signed off like i always do, cop explains that it now has to be taken to a ref to be inspected and signed off.
decide to go to the local CHP office to see if i get lucky, well i do. I get some lady who has never done a sing off before i explain what she's supposed to do and she does it. signed off, pay the 15 bucks at the office.
so i write my 10 dollar check and send in my signed off ticket to the necessary court.
Letter back explaining that the ticket can not be signed off as it is not a correctable violation, check sent back, pay 110 bucks or go to court.
Well i had been let off easy in the first place with the fix it ticket so i wasnt into going to court and giving the cop a chance to nail me for more so i just paid the 110 and forgot about it.
good luck fellas, sorry for the bad news

so the options are:
1. go to a smog station and get it reffed off?
2. go to court and fight it
OR
3. pay 110 bucks and not do anything else?
are these the options available?

Put the silencer in. Go to the La Jolla police station (they are nice) and get it signed off. Send it in with $10 (after u get the notice in 2 weeks) and you're done!!

Don't you take the car to the ref and have the muffler measured for how loud it is? I thought CA law says that the muffler must bee 95db loud or less. If the ref after testing and the muffler is within the requirements he will give a certificate saying its legal and you bring that to the judge and leave that in the car so next time you get pulled over you show the cop the certificate.
so does this mean that the fix-it-ticket does not apply to exhaust systems now?
if i can't get a simple write off, will the 110 cover everything and i'll be on my way?
i'm not really feeling on going to the ref.

Im not sure how it works but was reading this from a article emailed to me by SAN I think. I erased the article a couple of days ago. They showed you how to clear the exhaust ticket. If the ref works you don't have to fix the exhaust and it will be legal if you pass so the cops can't give you anymore tickets for your muffler. But if you fail than you need to replace your muffler until it is within CA requirements

Apparently you arent friendly with reading the whole thread, you WILL get your 10 bucks sent back with a letter that says it cannot be signed off. Either take it to a ref (risking having any other illegal smog devices pointed out) or pay the 110-ish and bite it.

alright, check out what i found.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27150_2.htm
is this saying that all the ref is gonna test is the dB level of the exhaust and give me a certificate saying it compliant to the suggested level (95dB or less)? or are they going to run a WHOLE smog session on my car and test it for the various gases that are emitted.
if so, then i'm gonna have to take off the jdm itr header and cat, won't i?

uhh correction, its not a fix-it ticket, theres a law that was passed some time ago that its not a correctable violation anymore, i got a exhaust ticket last year and they checked the box that said its correctible. so i corrected it and when i went to court the ****** clerk said its not correctible and the fine was 125. so its not correctible, and the fine is 125, more or less.
keep in mind there are a number of different violation codes that can be given such as "Modified Exhaust" "Excessive Noise" (also known as "Loud exhaust" or "Noise pollution") and so on

I just got pulled over too 2 months ago for my loud exhaust. Cop said it was a "Correctable Violation". I put my stock exhaust and went to the inspection station. When I got there, an officer told me that its not correctable anymore. They changed the law a few months ago. So anyway, regardless if you change it to stock or not you'll still pay the fine. I think it was $90. About the mail thing, they said there is a chance that they'll send you the ticket but sometimes they dont. Better go to the station/court instead because failing to pay will triple your fine. By the way did the officer ask to pop your hood?
