Default Brake Problem PLEASE HELP!

I just finished a complete brake job...new calipers, rotors, pads, drums, wheel cylinders, shoes and SS brake lines. I pumped the brakes several dozen times to get pressure and for some reason the E brake wont tighten...i thought it adjusted automatically but does this mean something is wrong with my back drums? I bled the brakes twice and am positive everything is on and tightened up. Maybe the old shoes/drums were worn and the E brake was adjusted for that and now there is too much cable. If anyone knows what the problem may be please comment. THANK YOU!
Vince

P.S. drove around and the brakes stop fine...pedal feels a little weird when pressing, kind of rough...not as smooth as before

The brakes won't stop your car right away cause you need to break them in, adjust your rear brakes for your e-brake to tighten up.

VAP - How should i adjust the rears? I know there's a self adjusting setup in there so i figured pumping them would tighten them up but that may be fore just pad wear.

Thanks,

Vince

That's only for calipers. Look in the illustration, #25 and #32 is what you use to adjust your brakes. When you slide your drums back on, make sure it's somewhat of a tight fit.

The self adjusters will only work when you are backing up. At least that is the case with most cars. The Disc brake setup is indeed different; my dealer told me to use it so that the rears would be adjusted. The use of the adjuster on the cables is to take up slack in them to set the handle at the correct height.

Thank you both...i got it all tightened up so the drum just fits on and the E brake pulls up to 5-7 clicks...sounds right to me.

yeah, just turn that 25/32 nut, and the shoes will kick out a bit each time it clicks. i do this every now and then... they are supposed to self-adjust, but i don't think they really do.. maybe i just installed them wrong.

Well I don't know all the answers but it's mostly from experience and I happen to have a friend that's a mechanic as well. I'm just glad I can help out.
