Valve Adjustment HELP!!!! PLEASE@!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi everyone.. i'm doing my first valve adjustment.. got a problem though.. when I was done with it I found out I was using the .015 mm-.021mm instead of the .15-.21mm feeler guages??? so now the engine sounds loud as heck... turned it off...
Does anyone know it's a misprint in the helm manual??? it it really the .15-.21mm???
one more thing.. for each bolt... say on first cylinder.. there are like 4 nuts you can adjust.. 2 on intake and 2 on exhaust... so i'm suppose to insert the feeler guage right on top of the bolt right...????..... not sure how to explain.. ok,. I see the cam... there are like 3 sections...right on top of each nut is a section of the cam... and then there is the middle section where there isn't a nut..??? I'm suppose to adjust the 2 sides of the cam right?? not the middle???? yes it's my frist time... hope someone can help me.. I gotta finish this quick...!!!!
and is it ok that I stick in the feeler guage on the side where the nut is or behind it..what I did was adjust the nut.. stick the guage in from the nut side...if it was too loose then I readjust and stick in the guage again...??? Thanks all!!!
This is for a 98 GSR...!!!

Darren, your first problem is that "you have to do this quick". You gotta take your time and do it right. I assume you dont have the adjustment tool that has the flat head screwdriver, so that alone tells me its gonna take a long time. Use the longer angled feeler gauges. You will need 2 different sizes 1 intake and 1 for exhaust. You will slide the gauge on the side that the bolt is on. There should be a spec sticker somewhere on the engine compartment that tells you the specs for valve lash. +/- is the acceptable tolarence for gauge sizes.
thanks guys... I finally finished it... got the right feeler guage from the auto shop... I was using the .015mm guage when it was suppose to be .15mm... ooo I bought the snap on tool so adjusting was easy... finished it all in 1 hour...
I used someones advice... for the intake... fit in the .006 until it's snug... and then make sure the .007 in guage won't fit in... is that a good approach.. I'm not sure if the car is quieter... I still hear a faint tapping noise.. but that is normal right???

Graphical representation of step by step. By feel, I insert the whole amount of gaging in (say .15mm) and then tighten it down on that. After tightening the locknut I make sure that I can still slide the feeler in, and can't fit the next size up (.16 mm). For the .15mm there should be a good drag on the gauges. This is all right, but it's still your own fault if you mess it up. Valve adjustments are easy, but can cost a burnt valve if you mess them up.

yes, easy to do, but just as easy to fawk it up. Also make sure you do this when the engine is cold (or at least sitting for several hours)
