Toda Spec B / SMSP Dyno Tuning Part II
Dave Stadilus (SMSP) and I went to the dyno today to play with my car. My last dyno session was spent mostly trying to fix the ill effects of bad valve lash. With all of that corrected now, I'm happy to say that my car posted leak-down test that were within spec and good compression numbers of 235 across the board. With that said, lets get on with it!
For reference, my mods are as follows:
'00 ITR #510
Stock compression
Stock fuel system
Stock OBD2+ ECU
Timing @ 16 deg
Toda Spec B cams
Toda Cam gears
Toda Valvetrain
Portflow Ti Retainers
SMSP ITR 4-2-1 adj. header
CarSound 2.5" cat or SMSP test-pipe
SMSP 2.5" adj cat-back
APEXi VAFC
Comptech airbox & filter w/ OE air-tube
One of the key tests we were to perform today was a comparison of the $60 Jeg's 2.5" cat that most of us here in NC have been using against the "mucho flow" CarSound cat. Unfortunately, late last night my car contracted a rattle I couldn't find. Upon pulling into the dyno today, it was very obvious that the cat was bad. Sure enough, after dropping it, we could see that the first brick had come lose and was floating around. Guess it was a good thing Dave had a CarSound laying around for me!
Here is a pic of my new beauty!

Ok, after I swapped the cat in, we were ready for a run. The temps were pretty hot and humid today. I think the Correction Factor was 1.03. Unfortunately, it isn't printed on the plot. Dave, can you recollect? My baseline on this dyno was a little lower than my previous pulls. My numbers a month ago were 183.3 whp & 125.4 tq.
Edit: We also performed a run with the OE air-tube disconnected at the airbox with no element. We lost across the board, both whp & tq.

We then decided to start playing with things. After adjusting the fuel at a few points, I installed a SMSP test-pipe. The adjustable exhaust system made this a snap to change out! I posted a 187 whp & 126 tq plot with this set-up. A nice gain, but not the "magic" that a lot of you out there claim! (Sorry, didn't get an individual plot) I then decided to remove the power steering belt. While this doesn't remove as much rotational weight as a crank pulley, it is a free mod that I can do when I want it. I am, as I'm sure many of you are, still quite unsure about the whole harmonic balancer issue! (please don't stand a debate on this!) Anyway, this was a great move as I gained about 2-3 whp cross the board. This gave me the below plot!

Here is an overlay of the two! Not bad for an afternoon of fun.

We also performed an open header vs. test-pipe/full cat-back run! The results are in a separate thread. Pretty interesting!
Well, I'm pretty happy! My goal was 190 whp today and I achieved that. What is next you ask? Header tuning. These are extension tubes that can be added to the header.

Lastly, I must thank Dave Stadilus for all his hard sweaty work today and to Mark of Turbo Tune for offering such great service and help.
PS: I will try to soon post a short movie clip of the exhaust note undet WOT. Many of you have expressed interest in Dave's exhaust and in particular the sound. Since I'm the only person with one currently, I'll try to help the rest of you get an idea. Stay tuned!

Well after seeing how much fun you had, I am kicking my self in the butt. Should have gotten my stuff done sooner. Look at all the good stuff I missed, I'll be with you and the gang next time.

We discussed the "what next" yesterday! Of course the BIG 3 are stand-alone(Power FC vs Hondata), headwork, and compression. I'll probably go after the computer next. Since the plot really isn't falling off at OE redline, I figure I can wring a bit more out of it. Got to do some more homework first though! I'd really like to redo compression, but I only have 30K on the car. Not really ready to pull the head off yet. I'll probably wait until after 50k for that.

Your absolutely right about the Conquest. Mark is a really big turbo guru, hence Turbo Tune! I believe he is better know for his Grand National work though. He had 3 there yesterday. I seem to recall him saying most were in the 450 whp range!

I believe we got 183 whp/ 123 tq after playing with the fuel with cat and full cat-back. Unfortunately, forgot to get a print of that. Never ran that set-up with the PS belt-off. If I generalize it should have put me around 185-186 whp and 124-125 tq.

Mark is a really nice guy. He has been super helpful with our team as well. You're right though. His turbo work is awesome. He built a realy nice turbo/hybrid Civic last year when I was still back in NC. This thing had a monster blower on it!
