Default FOR THOSE WHO DRIVE THEIR R HARD, USING 5W -30 MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC

Just curious if you guys or gals are burning any oil. In this heat, I think 5w-30 is a little to thin for our motors. I keep my car in vtec all day, and the oil level drops a tad. I did a compression check, and have same compression in all 4 cylinders and within spec according to the (acura bible)
Any opinioins or suggestions?

I've ran 10w30 mobil 1 up to 28000 miles w/ no loss of oil so far. At 28000, changed to 5w30. Just yesterday, I hit 30000 miles and still no loss of oil w/ the 5w.

While reading the Type R to the Max #2 last night, a Redline rep said that 5w30 oil is used by most of the racers in the CTR one make race. He also recommended 0w30 if it gets really hot during the summer.

yoshi - who's theory of 10w30 burning off less than 5w30 doesn't seem to be holding tr00

I run Mobil 1 5w30 in my Turbo car and the oil level hasn't dropped at all in the last two weeks or so. I'm rather impressed. I use 5w30 Mobil one as a standard rule. In my R which still has under 10k I use regular organic Castrol GTX 5w30 with a Honda filter.

I'm beginning to think the oil-burning issue might also have something to do with the fact that the ITR has a moly coating on the pistons (and after a while on the cylinder walls as well), and just might be letting some oil by (under HARD/HIGH rpm use).

So what if it burns some oil at the track, as long as you keep on top of it (and wash the car afterwards)!
I'm going to be checking the compression and leak-down in my 93K mile car in a few weeks (when I get back to the shop).

that's what I did w/ my R...1st 10K miles, 5W-30 Castrol, 1st oil change after 10K, 5W-30 Mobil 1

I haven't burned any oil at all, I have 30K miles

5W30 and 10W30 should perform exactly the same when at temperature, as any 30W oil will....

I've used the 5W30 variety of Mobil1 for about 8K, and when ragging on the car hitting redline all day, it does eat a little oil. Just top it up.

Molybdenum coating or not, some of the oil is still on the walls and burning, probably more of it under hard driving.

...have you ever ran a catch can?
My friend Eddy Lin runs one (tall guy with gutted 4 door sliver EK on spoon wheels at ITR SEXPO), and his catch almost fill all the way up after about a half day of racing at BW. I believe he only had to empty out his catch can once at the expo..but I'm not totally sure. Excess oil dump will go to the catch can if hooked up correctly...

I thought that as the engine wears with harder use the more oil will be burned.

I've got 34k plus miles on my R and I checked my oil for the first time yesterday since the Expo and I had burned a quart! Using Mobil 1 syn. 5w-30 and will switch back to LE 5w-30 next oil change!

Is it me or does my R motor get better gas mileage with 5w-30 than 10w-30?

ITRbroham -- you've only recently checked your oil!!! ....
Stick with the Mobil ! 5-30, but now check and replenish regularly. ed

If you need a thicker oil at operating temperatures you need 5W-40 not 10W-30. The number 40 indicates the thickness at operating temp.
Here, Honda recomends 5W-40 full synthetic.

My first oil change is coming up, I have almost 6000 kms on my R. I was thinking of going with synthetic, do you guys think I should or wait till 10,000 kms?

Your next oil change should be at 10,000 kms. So ,wait till 10,000 kms.
My ITR is burning 1 Liter (1 qrt?) every 10,000 km.....

How many of you race or drive your car hard? Every single r and gs-r owner I know burns oil, cause they run their cars hard.

I switched at 6K, and I think that is more than enough time to wait for the switch.

Thanks for the input guys.
On my first oil change I will put in synthetic 5/30 mobil. Unless anyone objects or thinks i should give it more time?

The only time I burn 5w-30 Mobil one is at the track. It's the high rpms usage that does it. I think the oil is just so thin it get sucked out the exhaust.

just bought a case of mobil 5w-30 yesterday. checked the oil ( i haven't actually changed it yet) and there were no signs of burning/loss of oil. i find it very odd that all these R owners lose oil, i dont think i've burned a drop since i got the car.

if you're burning oil, how many miles do you have on your car?

i've been using mobil1 0W-30 (which can be hard to find) for at least a year (and blasting around). maybe this explains why i'm burning oil quicker than i would expect to. i only got this because i bought into the sales pitch about quicker lubrication at cold startup. any reason not to use this? (in CA)

I'm at a little over 42,500kms now and I just had the head redone....many thanks to Ben at AJR!! Not to mention Raymond at Corrupt Designs....if it wasn't for you guys.... 'nuff said!

But I had a comp. test and leakdown test done about 2 weeks ago.... and I hit 200, 200, 200, 205 from cylinders 1-4 with a 2psi leak on all cylinders. Thanks to Howard in B'ham and Crescent for the hookup!

I've been getting a lot of white smoke.....coolant level is fine.... nothing foamy under my oil cap.....I got moderate amounts of soot all over the rear bumper, the rear trunk lid and parts of the wing are all covered in black speckles....

oil level seems to be normal to average consumption....I have been using 15W50 Mobil 1 for a lapping day @ Seattle Internation Raceway. From 2months ago till now I've managed to go through my 4.5liter jug (?) and another quart.

When I used Amsoil 10W40....it burned like crazy as well. 5W30 went like gasoline...and it wasn't till I dropped some change and used their 0W30 that things got stable....

Maybe my car just has an expensive appetite??
