after painting a car and clear coating it how soon should you wait to polish it or wax it?
30 days for anything as far as i've ever heard. you need to let the paint settle in.
Ok, here's the deal, if you do a nice, show quality paint job, after the clear has baked, you go back over it and block it off with some wet sand paper, 1000, 2000 and then 3000 . . . After that, you polish it out using a polishing compond . . . The paint, it's it's not settled after all of that fun stuff, is never going to settle. The whole wax thing never made sense to me, because nothing you can do waxing a car is going to come close to the finishing stages . . . Honestly, I'd be scared to drive a car with a new paint job without wax on it . .all wax is is a layer, it's not becoming one with your clear or anything.
I work @ a professional body shop.. and all we work on is high priced cars...
We NEVER.. NEVER EVER EVER wax any panel of the car that has been painted... We inform the customer to come back for a 30 day wax job.. 30 days is the minimum to wax anything... or you risk stripping the layers right off the car.. I learned that a long time ago when I sprayed wax a freshly painted car and suprised when I saw the car's color on my Rag..
I WOULD NEVER WAX a car untill the paint is properly settled.. No matter how long it has been baking in the booth for.. And mind you.. we use Autek booth's.. the best in the business.

you are right about the time period(30-90 day minimum). i go with the 90 day thing. And this is the reason.
If you wax a car before it is recommended you take the risk of trapping paint solvents in.This is a NO NO!! The proper time before wax will make your paint last longer,i am not saying that if you wax it that your paint is going to come off,but it can- haze the paint
make bubbles in the paint(blistering)
And i do know because I am a professional painter at a paint shop!!!!!!!!!!
we do about 30 or 40 cars a week so we .and i have been to school for all of this ****!!!!!!!!Hope this helped you guys out.

i've waited about a year or so to wax on my freshly painted panels.
it wasn't intentionally though, i was just lazy to wash my ride for whole year around...
but then, my painted area looks clean as heck when i washed and waxed it.

all that stuff is a myth. after body shops paint a car, they cut, wax and buff it. go to anybody shop and they will tell u the same thing. wax doesnt hurt the finish of a freshy painted car out of the body shop.

i heard both. waiting and going ahead and just doing it.
i say wait. 30 days really isn't that long. and better safe than sorry.
