How often should the Spark plugs and ignition wires be replaced?
My mom has a 98 accord v6.
i drive it around once in a while. and on 2 ocassions, it didnt start on the first crank...it actually took several.
the car has only 24k on it. [my mom drives no where]
the only guess i have is that the wires or the plugs are bad...
when should they be replaced?
thanks.

For spark plugs? No. My Helms says ~7500 miles. The plugs and stuff may very well last that long (75k), but it's good to keep "fresh" plugs in it.
you guys think thats why it is not turning over?
or could it be something else?
it took a good 6 or so cranks for it the turn over.
i know on my vw, it is recommended to change plugs and wires every 15k.

Hey did you figure it out?
What kind of gas does that Accord get? I know with the newer LEV Hondas, you have to fill regular 87(?..lowest grade) octane. Anything higher and the sensors freak.

I dont think so..
all three rating of gas is fine...
lev is nothing new for honda's in the state
ulev, sulev(newest)
at least 60K for sparkplugs

before you do anythng run some fuel injector cleaner through it and also take off the hose and with the engine running spray some intake cleaner down the intake while revving the engine a little to keep it from stalling.
my plug wires have 120k on them and measured out to about 1/2 the maximum allowed resistance specified in the Helms. I doubt its the wires.
i havent figured it out yet.
my mom puts in 89 octane.
good news is that since the post...it has been starting without a problem.
i guess i'll just bring it into the mechanic one day and see what he says.

plug wires are good for at least 5 years or 100k. i would replace them along with the timing belt.
spark plugs, well it depends. the 98-02 V6s come with platinums which can last 100k according to the manual. i would change them at 50K or so for optimal perfomance. if you your talking about copper plugs you can get 30k out of them. if you want best performance once a year or every 20k is fine. 7500 miles is way too soon unless your boosting or have an MSD ignition.

it could possibly be the ignition switch. go to http://www.honda.com and register to see if your car is involved with the ignition switch recall. if it is then you can take it to a honda dealer to get it fixed for free. i had the same problems about a year ago and after i got the ignition switch fixed, haven't had a problem since.
Depending on the type of plug you run you can get 80K or more out of it. I would change them out at 40 to 50K miles. I change plug wires at around the same time. We're not talking about a tremendous amount of money, it's just good preventative maintenance.
