slots/marks on the crank pulley for TDC reference
where is the slot, or mark, on the crank, without taking off the crank bolt, that needs to be lined up with this pertruding slit on the lower t-belt cover?

if its present without taking off the crank bolt, i cant seem to find it.
i need to line it up like this but with the lower t-belt cover on along with the crank bolt

::ib.RJ goes off on me that i need to take it to a mechanic:::

line up the eye-sight thing with the single mark (0 btc) in the pic. It should be white but if it's got crap on it, it can be hard to see.
Seems like you are taking a loooong time to finish your cam job! but at least you are doing it yourself. I'll give you props for that.

i found a mark, but its red along with a slot/cut in. its in the area where the alternator belt goes. can that be it?
no, RJ only tells you to read the helms
its tough to see on the pulley/timing belt cover. Ideally you'd just take those off and line up the crank gear w/ the mark on the block before you put the cover/pulley on. I always do that when i pull the timing belt off. The one time i didnt, it was off a tooth and car didnt run very well.
I'd suggest you invest in one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/c...46701 . They can be had for $119, they go on sale all the time. Pulls off crank bolts, axle nuts, countershaft nuts and all that good chit.

wouldnt this http://www.harborfreight.com/c...45252 be a better choice? same maker about the same specs only this one is cheaper and not cordless.

That depends on your use. I went cordless because i take mine to the track, to friend's houses, lately to a shop where we're building a hybrid race hatch and so forth. If you only plan to use it at home, corded isnt bad, but i hate cords since i'm a klutz and trip over them.

i like that one better</TD></TR></TABLE>
Yeah but that needs air. And air is just a pain in the *** most of the time unless you own a house. Also cant take air to the track.

is this the thing on the timing belt cover which you line the white slit with?

were in the process right now of finishing an engine rebuild and need to time it properly...just cranks. what purpose does a timing gun serve if you have it at TDC?

timing light is used to set igntion timing, by moving the distributor forwards or backwards. A normal inductive timing light will flash when the timing marks get to that index mark no the timing cover. A light w/ advance will let you adjust it so that you line up the TDC mark (which is easier to see than the timing marks).
