Default Seriously now, Who here Has Redlined 5th gear?

Who's done it? I mean I've hit it in 4th and it pulls like a son of a bitch from 7K till 8,400 and I shift but my blip usually puts it at 8,500.

4th is at 110 or so and I back off. No there wasn't a race and I wasn't endangering any lives, flora or fauna but my own so don't curse me with **** and Bull. I'm just curious from ones who know the REAL DEAL! What does it feel like? I know we all posted about theoretical top speeds and drag limited/related top speed but whats the top speed anyone here has achieved at factory redline?

What about members here with mods? and redlines/modified redlines and top speeds with these mods included?

I feel planted at most any speed in my R. Is there any time when it feels loose at speed? Or does it get disrupted for any reason at high speeds? Other than rain or the Sh*tty roads with speed-bumps and potholes here in NY.

No B.S. please. Real people with Real answers only. If you ain't constructive then GO AWAY!!!

Thank you,

A.

The Grand-Am Cup ITRs (formally Motorola Cup) almost top out 5th gear (not quite at the limiter) on the front straight at Daytona before braking for turn 1. They run stock gearing. They weigh less than a stock ITR and produce roughly 20-25 more hp.

I haven't seen any of the Race Prepared Type R's hit revlimiter in 5th. I've heard third and fourth....haha .

The Grand Am cars (Motorola Cup) sounded like stock gearing and looked like it at Sebring last year and VIR this past month, but I think the Real Time Cars run different gearing because they were taking those cars to some really high rpms at Sebring and Road Atlanta. They do have different mods between the Grand Am and Speedvision. Grand Am is mostly stock.....They run Stock Headers!

I haven't redlined in 5th but I have gone about 140 or so indicated. It definitely felt looser than it does even at 130 or 120, but still great compared to a regular car at 90.

pinning the speedo is s different story,,, Thanks for the info and about how fast would you say you were going? I was directing the question to R owners "and NO I'm not trying to be a *****, even if I come off that way." But, since I was curious about modded R's too and you must have a long list of mods. So again thanks for the info.

And even though you may have removed the revlimiter or changed the guage face/cluster you MUST have a redline area! Where is it for you? At or around our 8400RPM's? Besides riding the upper fringe like that especially after 9K or so must not be that good for your car? I know it's achievable and so is a functional 10K or so but hey life will be shorter there right?

How much HP/TQ are ya puttin out? I have a nice list of NA mods that I have compiled and started to slap on and wonder what you are doin so I can compare.

Hey Ross I was just in Manchester today.

The traffic on 84 East sucked Ballz. I had to get some town tax info that my wife forgot to send in. I sat in an RSX-S at Schaller Acura too. "Too bad I didn't have time to go for a test run." I saw 1 Debadged Si and 1 nice looking Teg Blue/silver or something but, he was going west around Farmington and I was in heavy traffic.

Hope we meet soon,

A.

PS my Spoon header came in finally

9900 indicated on tachometer in 5th gear.
9500rpm indicated on field display. Given gear ratios, thats about 175-180mph.
Also have to factor in my 205/50/16 tires.

Hehe you passed right through my town then. I'm actually in Boston right now, but it would have been cool if we bumped into each other (figuratively of course) on the road. Manchester has a decent import following, one of the only H-T members I know lives there. However as with many towns in CT there is a ton of rice. Driving around in an R in CT makes you feel pretty special because everyone there drives SUVs and VWs.

Let me know how the Spoon header feels. If you are in CT anytime soon I'd love to check it out. I am still slightly considering getting a header so I'm interested to see how it works out for you. lata

Thanks Steve, It is Steve Right?

Love the site, Pics and info. Which Toda cams are ya runnin? Out of curiosity why did you choose the JUN gears and match them to the Toda cams? I see that you are using the stock intake with just an aftermarket filter? So my plans should place me close to you when I'm done.

Thanks, and again nice R man,

A.

i had 5th at about 8500rpm and the speedo was past the 140mph marking(near the "y" in "premium fuel only") there wasn't enough room to go for the limiter, but i was close.

it felt good to me

I've got close but the damn JDM "speed blocker" cut in. Its supposed to limit it to 180K but when it finally cut in it was well passed there........

Some things I've heard... The RealTime ITRs use the stock gearing, but they sometimes use (since they're allowed) a shorter final drive depending on the track. Not sure if it’s the JDM unit. I believe last year they were not restricted on revs and I know that they were revving to a 9.1K rev limit. This year, along with a smaller air restrictor, I heard they also have their revs limited to 8500 rpm by the rules. With all this they are still producing more HP the the Grand-Am ITRs - which are "more" stock than the Speedvsion WC Realtime ITRs. Grand-Am rules do not even allow header upgrades, as you mentioned, but some cars like the Integra GSRs have been allowed to run aftermarket headers this year to make them more competitive. This has really fired up the other teams, especially HART. I was also told (from last race at VIR) that Planet Earth Motorsports admitted to revving their GSRs to 9000 rpm - which definitely means that there is no restriction on RPMs in the Grand-am Cup. I guess those guys racing in these series can afford to rebuild their engines a few times a year!

First time I ever hit the rev limiter in any car...
5th gear in a 96 Civic DX Coupe, my first car.
On a San Antonio to El paso run, doing about 115, indicated.

Thought I broke the car...
Come to think of it, it never really ran right after that.
Put 80000 miles on that poor car in 2 years and it never left me stranded.

I've never hit red line in 5th. But I have in fourth. My car is stock with no mods and I get 122 at 8200.

Redlined 4th and couldn't get fifth Hit about 140 on the Hutch had to shut it down for fear factor. Redlining 5th is tough task in N.Y.

I've had it up to about 7500rpm in fifth gear a couple of times. It was still pulling, there's no doubt in my mind that it will reach the redline in fifth. I just ran out of *****. The back end feels REALLY light at that speed. Small bumps feel like good sized speed bumps. Kind of scary actually. I think to drive that fast you need either more ***** than me or a heavier car that won't feel like it's going to take off.
