Default Need Help on 88-91 Weight differences--Doing Research

Looking at this page:

http://www.d16a.com/ef_weights.htm

It lists all of the 88-91 Civic weights. Most appear pretty accurate, but here are my questions.

1) Is the 88 Civic STD hatch *really* that light. What about the Dx.

2) What was changed between model years 88 to 89 with the hatches.

3) What was changed between 89-90 with the hatches.

4) Why the weight difference between the Dx and the STD in all model years.

5) Is the list accurate.

I realize that from 89-90 the doors got heavier, the bumpers got a little heavier, etc. What else? Any sound deadening changes?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I have never seen anything concrete on this. And I need to put some numbers together and reasons why for the SCCA as I'm trying to provide classing information for this car.

Thanks for the help.

are these weights really acurate? i never knew that the civic hatch EG's (92-95) weight as light as the crx. just think about it... crx is smaller... 2 seater.. eg is little bigger with 4 seats...

1. No, it's not. Honda lists the base weight of the 1988 STD as 1989 pounds. As for the DX, I can't recall from my manual. But it is not much more than this (low 2000's).

2. Not much changed from 1988 to 1989. Unlike CRXs, there were no door seatbelts until 1990. So no weight was added (my 1989 HB is no slower than my 1988 was). Besides maybe a few interior appointments (the 1989 STD has a different shift **** from the 1988 STD), the only REAL change is in the rear suspension. Also, the Civic SI HB was new for 1989. Contrary to what this list says, there was NO 1988 SI HB. Only a CRX SI.

3. The BIG change for 1990 is door mounted seatbelts (which added ALOT of weight).

4. The DX has more features than the STD. For instance, it has a five speed transmission, rear wiper, and console for the shift lever. All of these little things add some weight.

5. Some figures are accurate. For instance, the CRX weights are pretty close. But the information for HBs is not too accurate.

They are accurate. The later, higher trim CRXs (ie 1990-1991 SI) take a BIG hit due to the door mounted seatbelts. The mounting of seatbelts in the door requires alot of reinforcements to keep the doors from buclking from the forces it is subjected to. This is something to keep in mind if you think that ANY CRX is going to be lighter than ANY 1992-1995 HB. Because it is just not so.

if so i'd like to do that...also are the doors the same dimension-wise..could they fit?

they should fit physically but the problem will be the wiring. the 88-89 doors had different wiring harnesses in the as opposed to the 90-91. i replaced the door on my 91 civic with an 88 or 89 and the shop just yanked my old harness from one door into the other.

EDIT: Im wrong 2nd Gen REX is right

TRUST ME ON THIS ONE GUYS, DOORS FROM AN 88' CRX DO NOT FIT ON ANY OTHER CRX BESIDES AN 88. As a matter of fact, my 89' crx has door mounted seatbelts. only the 88'was different in seatbelts. The whole door frame from the 88's is completely different from the 89' - 91 crx doors. They will not fit. TRUST ME IVe tried it

Thanks for all of the help, guys. This gives me a good idea of what the cars actually are. Now I just need to locate a few FSMs and look at those numbers.

In the later years, Honda rated the weight of the cars including A/C, where earlier years it was not part of the equation. Thats almost 50lbs.

The 1989 HF is the only non-1988 CRX without door seatbelts.

I don't see how this could be. If this was true, then the 1990-1991 SI should weight quite a bit more than 2174 pounds. After all, the 1989 SI weighs 2138 pounds. If you add 45-50 pounds to this, you come out with 2183-2188 pounds.

The 91 Civic Si is 2291. This would make sense that the a/c was an added option in the weight. I don't see how the Si could put on over 130lbs from 89 to 90 without the a/c being included as an option.

As far as the CRX--I don't know.
