OBD2 GSR Swap into an OBD1 Civic
I'm about to swap an OBD2 GSR motor in my 95 Civic EX Coupe and I was wondering what parts I will need to swap to keep my car OBD1. All I know right now is that I need an OBD1 Distributor. Is there any other parts I will need to swap? I tried doing a search and couldn't find anything.
you need all of the parts to go OBD1, such as you can use the obd2 dizzy, but it is a 2 plug as opposed to 1 plug obd1. you will need to get a wiring harness from an OBD1 car, dont worry about the skunk2 conversion harness, if you ever want to run hondata you will need 0bd1. so.... obd1 ecu, harness, dizzy(not super important, just some wiring hassle) and your good to go. Add some stuff if I forgot anything guys.

I just put a 98 GSR (USDM) in my 93 Cx. I didn't have to change $hit! Just added 4 wires from the motor to the ECU and a p72 ECU. Runs like a champ

you don't need to
it bolts right in
all you need is an obd1 p72(gsr) ecu and thats it
wire in iab, knock, and vtec if you don't already have it

So if im putting a 2000 gsr engine in my 1993 civic all i do is change the ecu to p72 obd1 and thats it. Will my VAFC wires still be all in the same place as well as my vtec wires, i hooked up my vtec wires straight from teh solenoid of my d16z6 to the ecu as it was a dx before. Also i take it that i use 94 del sol radiator hoses on bottom and gsr hoses on the head and a p54 del sol a/c bracket!!
Also i heard that the obd2 swap in my obd1 civic wont be as strong as the obd1 engine in the obd1 car. I figure i mine as well get the 2000 engine rather then an old 1995 engine , that way my 1993 coupe will be like brand new again.

wrong obd 2 is one plug.........obd 1 is 2 plugs.
from what i believe only 96 distributors are the only ones convertible to obd1 plugs. cuz in 97 they added a cfk sensor.......crank angle fluctuation? which in turn removed a sensor used in the distributor.

yes you can wire your sensors straight to the ecu and the radiator hoses you can use gsr ones.........just get some adjustable clamps from napa/schucks. *ones you tighten with a screw driver.

The OBD2 GS-R swap will plug right up if you use the OBD2 engine harness that comes with the GS-R swap. You will have a few plugs left over because the Civic's chassis harness doesn't have every single plug like the OBD2 cars do.
The plugs will all plug right up on each strut tower area. You don't have to swap distributors, injectors, or any of that bullshit if you keep the GS-R harness.
Then just find an OBD1 P72 ECU and plug it in. From there simply wire up your knock sensor and secondary butterflies and you're done. Your EX will already be wired for VTEC.
Running an jumper harness with the OBD2 ECU will suck ***. You will hav to wire up extra sensors and OBD2 is too sensitive and likes to throw CELs for no reason many times.

As for the IAB, you will have to reverse the polarity & switch pins A17 & A20 in order to make it work since an OBDII motor requires a positive signal to the butterflies. If you had an OBDI gsr motor, all you need to do is switch pins A17 & A20
thanks for the help guys. I think it sounds pretty straight forward. I will go ahead and tackle the job and I will keep you guys posted on the process.

this is exactly what I did and had no problems. for an obd2 motor going into any obd1 car ALL YOU NEED IS AN OBD 1 ECU!!! everything bolts in and plugs up!

listen to this guy ... i did your same swap but with integras dont buy anything BUT a stock p72 from a 94-95 gsr its obd1. run 3-4 wires.. knock/iab and whatever other wires it was . i only did 3 on mine though. but anyways you will just have to use everythign from the obd2 motor including the harness. plug it all in.. plug ecu in wire the 3-4 wires and your set.. i have a 00 gsr in my 94 ls integra wired vtec pressure/vtec soleniod , and knock sensor.. and plugged in a obd1 p72 easy swap has ran perfect and very strong for 1 year so far ..good luck!
