4th Gen Rotor-Over-Hub Swap: Complete
For those here who don't frequent AccordinglyDone I give you this... my struggle with shitty accord brakes and slide hammers is over.
After many hundreds of dollars, tears, getting yelled at by my wife and many other things here it is:
Thanks to Type-SH for info as the CL hubs were key... nothing more nothing less. All I did was buy a couple CL hubs, pound them into some new accord wheel bearings and off I went.. here are the pics:
CL Hub Banged into the Accord wheel bearing and bolted onto the Accord knuckle.
CL Hub Banged into the Accord wheel bearing and bolted onto the Accord knuckle #2.

Its been a bit stressful and tiring, but i feel the advantage of rotor swapping in minutes instead of 2 hours is worth it.
The cost:
1.) 2 Acura CL Hubs: $55.00 (Honda/Acura P/N: 44600-SY8-A00 if you're a 4cyl car like me. Honda/Acura lists this as a hub assembly for a 1998+ Acura CL 2.3 Premium). NOTE: Honda includes studs with the hub assembly. DO NOT order studs unless you really want 8 sitting around.
2.) 2 Honda Accord Wheel Bearings (mine were old, if yours are OK just press the old hubs out): $51.00/pr. The Federal-Mogul P/N for 4th gen w/o rear disc/abs: 513098.
3.) 2 Rotors: For now I'm sticking with 10" rotors and 22T bracket calipers due to other priorities in the budget right now. they were $35.00 per side.
Informaton to keep in mind:
1.) My car is a 1991 LX WITHOUT ABS or rear discs. As such this information is geared mostly towards that vehicle or ones close to it. From what we've learned, Accords with rear disc use a different wheel bearing up front. While the bearing diameter is the same for the hub, I'm just letting you know in case you have problems.
2.) Make sure you're getting 4cyl hubs with the p/n listed above. Otherwise you'll get a nasty suprise of 3.0 CL hubs show up. They're about 2-3mm too wide for an Accord wheel bearing.
3.) Stock size rotors can be used in this swap or step up to the 11.2" rotors. It's all up to you.
I'm not going to cover calipers in this thread since thats such an open question/issue and its all personal preference as to what you use.
Good luck!

those are the legend calipers that only have one cylinder, are they any different from stock accord ones? do they brake more? they look really good.
Accord have 2" pistons, legends & preludes have 2.25" (maybe not all preludes.. but i dunno). do they brake more???? ... prolly not an apreciable amount better... these calipers are just what I ended up with.

You can change rotors SOOOOO EASY compared to hub-over-rotor, that's what he wanted.

Great mod! Just to clarify a bit: If I do this I will still be able to use the stock Ex calipers? Also when I wanted to order some aftermarket rotors I would still ask for 4cyl. accord rotors correct? Thanks
If you dont see the advantage of this swap.. heh... you've obviously never done brakes on a 90-97 Accord.
For now.. ya you could use your stock accord nissin or akebono calipers. If/when in the future you decide to upgrade ... you need to be more specific about what you're wanting to do. Basically you now have the same brakes as a newer CL/Accord so anything they can do you can do too. If you're asking 'can i use 90-97 rotors' the answer is no.
When I finally get some money for tires on my 15" wheels I'll be using prelude VTEC rotors and a set of twinpiston legend calipers with 23T brackets.

and that setup will bolt up as well now that you've done this?

Gimpy Accord,
Thanks for the cool info and pictures .... This has given me hope as I have been dreading doing the front brakes on my newly aquired 90 EX-R (Canada)
I have a couple of questions ... I appoligise if these are stupid newb questions ... but I am a totaly new to Accords (I know Civics and Tegs) and I have no idea where or how to find this info.
Q1 - With the 2.3CL hub conversion what Rotors are you using ... if you are starting with a stock size (10") then the OE rotors(hub over rotor) will not work corrrect, so what rotor do you use ... a 92-95 non-vtec Prelude rotor(rotor over hub) or 2.3 CL rotors?
Q2 - I assume you are reusing the stock Calipers as well, or do you have to use the Prelude calipers as well (does the caliper bracket to rotor spacing change with the CL conversion?)
Q3 - What are these 22T brackets you are refering to ? ... OE 90-93 Accord caliper bracket ???
Q4 - If you were to upgrade to a 11" rotor with your CL conversion would you then use a 92-95 Prelude Vtec rotor and the Wagon/Lude/ITR Caliper ?
Q5 - Is there any clearance issues with the 11" rotors and the Stock 15" multispoke alloy's ... I know 15" rims are about the minimum size with a 11" rotor (I have redrilled 11" lude rotors with Accord Wagon calipers on my EG Civic)
Thanks
Moose

wow..oldie post now!
A1) Currently I'm using 10.1" rotors from a Acura CL/98+ Accord 4 banger. You're correct you cannot use your old style rotor anymore.. toss it or sell it to another poor accord owner.
A2) Presently I'm using Nissin calipers with the 2.25" piston. Stock accord calipers are 2" piston. You could use stock calipers if you wanted to, no problem. The key to all of this is the bracket, which I'll discuss in your Q3.
A3) 22T is the stock Accord caliper for 10.1" rotors of any sort... it PHYSICALLY will not fit over a 11.2" rotor. 23T is what you wanna use with 11.2" rotors.
A4) You have a couple choices, Prelude VTEC rotors or some of the V6 CL/TL/Accord rotors sorry I havnt really researched all those since im still 10.1") Prelude VTEC for sure. You wanna use a nissin caliper with a 2.25" piston (Legend, ITR, Pelude VTEC etc) or maybe you'd even wanna up grade to a dual piston unit from a Legend GS.
A5) You'll be fine... 15" 7 spokers will house them just nice!
If I didnt answer something to your satisfaction let me know!

just for the record, a larger piston diameter will increase the speed of peak torque development...causing the car to come to rest a slight bit faster than it would with a smaller piston. It also increases the CF of the pad and the rotor given a specific brake pedal force.
As for the swap, it looks really nice! This is the first illustrated version I have seen. Dang it, now I'm all interested in finishing my brake system again...*sigh* cars are such a headache.

q1) i have 98-99 3.0 CL rotors , 11"
q2) stock caliper for stock sized 10" rotors (2.3 CL or i guess 4th gen non-vtec lude, or 6th gen i4 accord) will work, u will need the "larger" caliper for any 11" rotor.
q4) 98-99 3.0 CL rotors would be ideal, 97 3.0 CL rotors will NOT work. prelude VTEC rotors should work. I'm not aware of any other 4x114.3 rotors in 11" though, the newer CL/TL/AV6 all use 5 lugs.
q5) 7 spoke EX wheels will clear the 3.0 CL rotors + calipers fine (i have them on).
