Default How to: steering wheel removal (20 pics)

I rescently lowered my seat to make some helmet space and have since been reaching for the steering wheel. I was unwilling to move the seat forward any, so a spacer was needed. While I was at it I threw on a new wheel too.

OMP "superquadro"

Hub:

Adjustable spacer (up too 2")

On with the install:

Step 1: DISCONECT THE BATTERY.

Remove cruise control block off plate from right side of wheel.

Take off this black thing.

Remove the T30 bolt (the gold one)

Remove the cover plate from the left side of the wheel and remove the T30 blot on that side.

Air bag will now pull out.

Remove the SRS clip by pulling back on the metal sheath like so:

Remove black clip and the bag comes free. You can now remove the steering wheel by undoing the 19mm nut holding it on.

Remove column cover. This pic shows the tabs that lock the top on:

The bottom is held on by 3 phillips screws. Two here in the front and one in the back.

Now you can remove the cable reel. Disconnect the SRS clip from under the column.

There are two sets of wires connected to the reel. You just disconected one of them from the car, it stays with the reel. The other get unpluged from the reel and stays with the car. Remove the tape holding the two sets together and remove the reel.

Bolt on the hub with the 19mm nut that held the old wheel on.

Slap on the new wheel.

If I missed something or made an error please correct me.

As an aside, some people have been curious about the position of my C's DPS in relation to the steering wheel. Here is first gear:

Second:

And Fifth:

But I can no longer touch the stalks and the wheel at the same time. Oh well.

C's DPS: $300
Steering wheel and spacer: $600
A car that fits me PERFECTLY: Priceless.

word of advice. get higher grade allen screws like the ones that come with the sparco. my omp screws were crap (stripping wise) compared to the sparco ones i got from a friend.

Awesome, I like the position of the shifter relative to the steering wheel. Quick shifting on the track!!

I think that is the most important thing that you said. That is what I love the most about my car.

Great writeup.

i just swapped my steering wheel a few minutes ago as well. i think the hardest part for me in removing the stock wheel was that stupid cruise control cover. that thing wouldn't budge. after much prying, i cracked it but hey, i got it off!

omp wheels and hubs are same pattern as the momo sparco. the oddball wheels are the nardi/personal units.

I am 6'1'', I am using an OMP GRIP seat with OMP compitition rails (non sliding). In order for my arms to be the correct distance from the wheel I would of had to have my knees up around my ears. Yoga is for chicks.
