Default Skunk2 H22 dyno plots and tech

i orginally posted this in the accord froum but i figured u prelude guys might want to see it also.

hola, i have been talking about getting my car tunned for what seems like forever and yes it has finally happened! My mods are listed in my signature and hondata tunning was preformed by Jason AKA st00pid. I give much thx to Jason for his time and expert help in tunning and to Tom for setting me up with the tune .

first some info about the build. i am running skunk2 stage 2 cams at the moment and have nothing but GREAT things to say about their performance. As u will see from my dyno charts these cams make great power after VTEC hits and make peak power at 7500 RPMS. these cams seemed to like having the VTEC engadged at a amazingly low 4600 without ANY hestitation at ALL.

i went ahead and put a link to the dyno chart because the pic is rather large: http://www.imagestation.com/pi...6.jpg

for those that are to lazy to click i ended up laying 190 hp and 152lb of torque on run 23. after the car was turned off and the chipped burned and installed we did another run and i dyoned 193hp and 153lb of torque, i gained a 3 hp after only 5min cool down. i think with the car cool i could easily dyno high 190s and after i get my skunk2 manifold/hondata IM gasket i can promise that i will be making over 200 at the wheels ALL MOTOR. thats without even touching the bottom end!

IMPORTANT THINGS U MIGHT WANT TO KNOW. tunning is key when it comes to getting nice numbers from these cams. just dropping the cams with my chipped p28 yeilded SHITTY as numbers. NOTE: this was before the hondata and tunning

again the pic is rather large so i will jut post a link: http://www.imagestation.com/pi...2.jpg

for those to lazy to click i dyoned 172 hp and 119lb of torque. compare that with my hondata and numbers and u will see i gained over 20 hp at the wheels and 34lb of torque.

a couple of closing things to rember about stage 2s u must UPGRADE ur valvetrain
with stiffer valve springs, i would also rec. titanium reatiners. the stock bottom end on a h22a4 can handle 8500 rpms, altough i would not rec. revving it that high on a daily basis. lastly i am not sure what to say about the tensioner issue, i am using the auto tens. and it has been fine for me for the last 3000 miles but u may want to change to the manal tens. setup...............

o and here are some pics of the build and some old pics of the car

thx and happy tunning

Nice writeup, but damn the dyno when the Skunk2 cams were just dropped in looks UGLY. VERY lean though the entire RPM band. Why didn't your abort the run when it was like 20:1 A/F? Do you have a SAE run with A/F for the Hondata run?

yes i know that 1 dyno session it was LEAN as all hell, im actually suprised the motor lasted. it was dumb of me to let carboy make a tull to 78000 with the af being that BAD.......... on me, make that a

im sry to say i dont have the AF ratio on a graph for the second session on the dyno, but i can tell u i was at a constatnt 13.4-13.7 AF with the hondata

just goes to show that generic chips SOMETIMES dont work all that well on any kind of motor setup.

btw i went and asked a local parts place for a price on the H22 skunk2 manifold and was quoted around $340.

Nice numbers Do you need the Vafc when you have a hondata unit?

very nice numbers...im trying to get mine to the dyno, im pretty positive it will put down between 190-200whp...and thats with nothing changed internally in the head or bottom end, stock cams valvetrain pistons ect..which makes me wonder...so u gained 20hp? with the cams?or something to that effect, im leary of them, there have been a few people with skunk2s at our track, dyno tuned ect, and none ran very well...i going to trip the 200 mark with bolts on..its my goal! lol..and then on goes the ignition and 75 shot...and 12 sec timeslips!

looks like that make more power over stock however I still dont like that fact that the torque falls off so early in the power band and just keeps on dropping after that. I think for the lude engine to reach its max it has to get more torque all the way to 7.5k to be competitive..

Good numbers though and nice setup..

Now tell us what you paid for tuning. that jason guy never got around to calling me back for tuning, poor poor customer service, but I guess that's because I wasn't his 'friend' and didn't bow down to him like he wanted.

Not that impressive, but I guess for H22 it is. I run CTR cams (which are pretty mild), and I made 202hp and 152 torque from a 2.0L B series, I figured a H22 would have way more torque than me.

My Dyno. Notice how the torque curve is flat? Your's is all jacked up. Jason did this? Guess he's not so good with NA cars either.

More dyno plots for comparison

'93 JDM H22a in a '92 accord. Stock accord exhaust with the muffler removed. Engine is near stock, with only a DC intake, as well as a Ks-Rom rechipped ecu and a spoon vtec controller. Also running a straight pipe; no cat.
Notice minor leaning at vtec crossover.

This is just for comparison... I made 194HP/ 158tq with a slightly ported head (Match ported only), Web Cams (148e-267 grinds), port flow springs, factory ecu, and a field VTEC controller, DC header, and an AEM 2 1/2" CAI. The bottom end was stock. Good power can be made inexpensively if done right.
The toque curve was simmiliar to the "acura_typer" posted, but dropped off around 7000 RPM.

What is your point by this? Are you implying that h22's suck? The displacement between your B20 and the h22 is minimal. You should have similiar TQ to an h22.
I am also sure your bottom end is not stock. Your comparison is a weak one. Try again. If you want to compare a stroked b series (which is basically what you have) to a similiar h22a then do so, but your comparison in this thread is not valid.

actually, i have a b20, not stroked B series. It has the same stoke as the LS. What is the stroke of the H22?

I wasn't saying the H22 is crap, I'm saying jason's tuning is crap. I'm sure SOMEONE else could get more power out of it.

Get that chip off your shoulder too man.

lol That is why I left it alone. I thought he was being a wise *** too at first but then I reread the post and he was basically just showing his numbers and downing the tuning.. But I definately think he should be getting more power out of those cams if they are soo great.. But he didnt post the A/F so it is hard to say how..

From the engine you started with, would you say that the stroke is longer than a B18c5? That is if you had a type R to start with and also considering that a b20 VTEC is not a "factory" engine. That was just my observation. The stroke of an h22 is 90.7mm

Who really cares. That wasn't the point of the original post and it wasn't your intent either.

Get real. Read this again. Who has the chip?

Glad to hear. I too hopefully will have some dyno numbers and times this year to post up for comparison. Just want to make sure everything else is fool proof.. Mainly a cage and upgraded brakes for starters.

Isn't the B20 out of a CRV?? someone correct me if I'm wrong.

But, I pray to god an SUV has more torque than my ahem..."sports coupe"

Sad to think that a motor out of a "SUV" makes more power than a "sports coupe" isnt it?

BTW, early early preludes, like 91 or so had a B20, but a completely different version (longer stroke, low reving, low power).

I'd be interested to see a B20/VTEC like mine in a lude, less weight and more power, wow!

edit: Wasn't pointed to dog the H22 in my reply, but if you take it that way, thats fine. I was saying Jason doesn't know what he's doing on an NA motor, I'd hate to have a torque curve that looked like the one the owner posted.

No, actually it's not sad to see a SUV make more power than a "sports coupe." To tell the truth, I'd EXPECT it generally due to higher weights and needs of more torque.

As for your setup, you're running 12.5:1 compression, Alaniz head, cams, probably ported IM, Hondata and a bunch of other things. I'd EXPECT that motor to be running higher than just dropping in a set of cams and valvetrain... Now, similarly tuned a H22 would be putting down around 240+ whp and I don't even have a clue to the torque number. It's just that no one has built a street motor for the H22 that's published it.

As for the guy's torque curve I've never seen a dyno with Skunk2 cams other than one other suspect one. For all I know Skunk2 designed the cams that way, since it's already been established that their "tech" guys have no idea what they're doing.

It's because they don't exist? No one wastes the money on H22, since its such a redheaded bastard motor?

Anyway, I was concentrating on the fact that the torque curve sucks on that motor tune, it COULD have been smoothed out im sure, at $300 bux an hour, which about what st00pid charges??
