Default Tranny rebuild. Grinding noise--mainshaft bearing?

Whenever I am coasting IN gear, any gear, The tranny makes some kinda grinding noise. does not sound like gear crunching noise. When I push in the clutch the sound goes away, and it also goes away when i'm in neutral. But it only does it when I'm coasting in gear, and not when I accelerate.
I've been told that this is due to a bad mainshaft bearing.
Now, I've opened up my tranny casing and found many bearings inside the tranny. Which one do I replace? Do I replace more than one bearing? Please help.

is always wise to change all the bearings on the tranny.... mainshaft bearing

the countershaft bearing

this one its also another mainshaft bearing

and of course the differential bearings

and while u at it check the differential pin that u can see tru this last pic..... try to move it . they are notorious to be worn ou tand move on 4G trannies.... if it is, i am going to tell u right now that the tranny has a very short life left... ti that pin breaks...and this happends

Yup that pinion shaft snapped on me---luckily it didnt get thrown around in my tranny. Check that, and do yourself a favor and buy a full bearing kit, dont half *** them. That's what I did and now I am finally confident in my tranny. Just take your time.

i'm having the same problem unfortunately, but i dont have the time to fix it untill possibly the weekend or maybe not even untill late next week.

I just bought another hatch, "89" and i wanted to know if i should worry about something happeneing while i'm driving this week back and forth to school. I"ll most likely attempt to fix it, but i'll be getting an SI tranny for my SOHC swap, but untill then, and while i dont have any money, how long will this thing last roughly??.. should i worry about it.. or not drive it other than to school?

have you get a closer look on the trow out bearing of the clutch, does your clutch is used or do you have a new one ??
anyway, it's a bearing for shure,
just make shure it's not the trow out one before rebuilding your tranny !!

Like said before, change all the bearings....main/input, counter, etc. My olds trans make those hideous noises while driving also....pulled the trans, and the input shaft could be wiggled a 1/2 inch side to side, Thats how shot those bearings were.
Throw in a new input shaft seal as well, so the clutch stays dry.

Befriend a local tranny shop... I have a friend that owns one so I got him to give me a rebuild kit at cost. This included all new bearings, seals, and syncros. the only thing left that could go wrong inside would be the shift forks and differential as stated above, give them a good inspecting. If the diff's bad, get a Quaffe or Kaaz LSD. I also got my tranny case hot-tanked before re-assembling for that new-tranny freshness. So far I've got 7000 mi on the rebuild and it's running great!!!

If there's no other way for you to get one, I may be able to persuade my friend to get me another kit, It would probably end up being around $270 shipped. You could probably get it cheaper at a local shop, but if you can't find one any other way IM me with the exact year, make, model, and serial # if possible and I'll see what I can do. I know he won't be willing to order for JDM trannies.... sorry JDM guys.

Edit:
Nipponracing: I just noticed that you're from Seattle, the place that my friend orders his rebuild kits from is from Seattle. It's called Alltrans. I'm pretty sure they only do wholesale though.

Edit #2:
my bad, they're in Portland OR, not Seattle.

lemme get some opinions.. how much should i be paying if i picked up an SI transmission?>... rebuilt/rebulit??...

I dont want to get ripped, and i've seen prices bounce all over from 150- 450 ....
I need to get a new tranny anyway because i have a vtec head sitting around waiting to be put it, but i'm definitely not using my DX tranny......... I might go to the junk yard today, see whats laying around... how much should i assume to pay??>.....

used - $100, you can usually find someone on this website that's selling one (Keith?)
completely rebuilt (like new) $400-500 w/ core exchange. Usually they'll take any 5-speed in as a core, they kind of frown on trading a 4-speed for a 5-speed though.
