Default Help diagnose clutch chatter?? ACT SS disc and HD pp

I was hoping someone could explain why this is happening.
I had a ACT ss disc, HD pp and a Clutchmasters 8lb flywheel installed last year. Since then, I only put 1000 miles on the car.
When the car is warmed up and is idling in nuetral, I hear a tapping sound comming from the tranny. Somedays louder than others. When I depress the clutch, the sound goes away. I can duplicate this sound over and over.

Another thing which just started this month, if the car is cold and I launch to pull out off my driveway, I hear a shriek for a second then it goes away. This will continue to occur until the car is fully warmed up.

Do any of you guys experience the same thing? Can anyone diagnose this from what I posted? I'll be auto-xing and tracking soon and I don't want my clutch to blow up on me.

Thanks folks!

-Nick

Sounds like it could be release bearing.

When you say you hear a shriek, does it kinda sounds like your tires are peeling out? Sometimes my cluctch makes that noise, and it sounds exactly the same as tires breaking loose.

I have a ACT Extreme PP with a SS Disc and mine does the same. If I start the car cold and go to move it makes that slight screach noise for a sec or two. It is something to do with the disc but not a problem to be concerned about. SGT's ACT clutch does the same thing he tells me. I would not pay it any attention not unless the noise or clutch slippage begins.

This "tapping sound". It it just one or two taps when you take off in 1st gear? Does it sound like a screwdriver being slaped against a piece of metal?

I just got a ACT clutch, and Comptech flywheel, and mines just started doing it. Dont know what the hell it is. The only thing I've been able to corelate is it happens when I take off in 1st gear, and sometimes in second, and sometimes when I gun the gas, and sometimes when I let off the gas quickly. Its coming from the right side of the car. Right now I'm waiting to see if it gets worse or goes away.

I have a HDSS setup as well, but with an ACT 8.8 lb flywheel.

I experience that same thing on a daily basis, but I haven't experienced the chatter.

The tapping sound is most likely transmission noises caused by torsional vibration. The springs in the center of the disc usually dampen this out but only with the help of the heavy stock flywheel which you replaced with a lightweight unit. Torsional vibration is basically the rotational pulses (rapid speeding up and slowing down) of the crankshaft that happens a few times per revolution. Without proper dampening, it produces noise in the transmission. It is a little harder on clutch discs but otherwise shouldn't cause a problem. I cannot explain the screeching sound. I know this is sometimes experienced with the race discs (4 or 6 puck) but I haven't heard it with the street discs. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Dirk - Thanks for the explanation. Is there anything that I can do to provide imporved dampening besides changing to the stock flywheel? I'd like to empasize that I am NOT having any problems with this setup. I am simply making observations and questioning why this is happening. The ticking sound doesn't happen all the time but mostly when the car has been driven a few miles and is fully warmed up. Also depending on which angle/elevation the car is resting in, the sound will get louder. If this is a common occurance, then I will be happy to live with it just so long it doesn't kill my input shaft & bearings.

As for the shrieking ....... that goes away once the car is fully warmed up. I don't feel any slippage and other folks have seen this as well, so should I assume this is natural behavior and live with it?

I get this all of the time, but no chatter as of yet.

If indeed the ticking is caused by torsional vibrations then there is not much you can do. If it is torsional vibration then you should have be getting the noise only when the clutch is engaged (pedal up) and when the gears are under no or low loads. It is just part of the compromise of using a lightened flywheel. It doesn't really cause any problems other than possibly reducing disc life. It should not affect bearings. As far as the shrieking, this is a mystery to me. I have never heard this personally and have seen many cars with these clutches in them. It doesn't sound like something that will cause a problem. Let me also remind you that it is impossible to conclusively diagnose either of these sounds without being there to hear it and see the car.

Just as a fyi, I have the same sound on my HDSS clutch kit.
I have been told its a bearing, to the slave mc, no one really seams to have a good idea.

The latter is the problem, no one seems to know.
