New Clutch - Burning Smell HELP!!!
Just installed a new OEM Type R clutch kit in my 94 GSR and after a short, easy drive it is making a god-awful smell, much like a burning clutch. It MAY be something else burning, but it smells like the old clutch disc that I just took out, only alot stronger. I replaced the disc, pressure plate, pilot and release bearings, greased it all up and torqued it all down. I took it very easy on the first 5 mile drive and noticed the smell. Is this normal ? Will it go away as it breaks in? I did NOT resurface the flywheel, but it was smooth and looked ok. The clutch feels a bit softer than the OEM GSR clutch, and there may be a little air in the line.
What gives? I REALLY don't want to have to do the whole job again !!!
HELP!
Also, it sounds like a light metalic klinking noise when driving that I don't remember from before. argh

one question, why did you choise to install a stock ITR clutch? its basicaly the same as the gs-r clutch, so close that you'd probably not notice a difference. you said you here weird noises and funny smells, well I personaly think you should take it back to whom ever installed the clutch, especialy cause you said these problems weren't present before the clutch install.
adjust your clutch pedal per manual specs, its complicated so I cant copy it down for you, but the Helms manual has a step by step.
possibly your pedal adjustment is not allowing full engagement/disengagement of the clutch.
and a FYI, I heard a bit of rattling in the first 100 miles too.--new ACT clutch.

Thanks for the ideas - ANYONE ELSE ????????
Ok, I will bleed the clutch again tonight, and check the pedal adjustment.
I hope I didn't "glaze" the disc. I've never had one make this smell and I think I even saw some smoke.
PS - I can't take it back to the shop that did it because I did it !!!
And I put in an ITR clutch becauase it bolts right up and is supposed to be a bit better than the GSR stuff.

OK, drove it a little more, and the smell is not as bad - I think it's gonna be ok. Still need to re-bleed it and check for air.
The ITR clutch seems softer than the GSR one it replaced...hmmmm

You probably put a bit too much grease and when the clutch spun for the first time, the grease got onto the surface and is burning off now. Also, the clutch plate, pp, and flywheel need to wear in a bit so they will all meet flat together, so you might be having uneven wear just as it breaks in, it'll be gone soon.
The softer, things just need to be bled, and bled well, adjusting the pedal is difficult, to loosen the locknut, you need two 12mm wrenches, and one of them you need to use a grinder and grind it down to half the thickness so you can use one to hold the bushing and one to break the locknut loose. You can't see it unless you take the master cylinder out.
Also, if you haven't done so, go buy some locktite green, the stuff you can put in after the bolts are on, open up the little panel at the bottom of the tranny and squirt a little onto each of the flywheel bolts, just turn the crank manually to get to each one from the backside.
The rattling can be many things, most importantly, did yo refill the tranny with fluid? Did you knock any heat shields loose? Did you drop the header when you pulled it, you might now have the infamous b-pipe rattle.
