[FAQ] Tie rod end removal
Real easy man. First remove this nut:

Nut loosened:

Then use a fork or tie rod puller to separate the ball joint. This should be really easy because if you're replacing it your ball joint is probably already bad. I found that hitting the threads of the joint from the bottom with a sledge hammer works very nicely.

Then the tie rod end just unscrews right off. Very Easy.

My car vibrates at speeds above 80 mph, so I went to get an alignment. The guy at the shop said my tie rods are "shot". Does this mean I need to replace the ends like this?

when i hard right turn my car shutters and the boot at the ball joint is split open like the picture above. Do you think the tie rod or steering axle is causing this problem? Lemme know what you think
Yes folks, if you're steering is really loose, REPLACE THOSE TIE ROD ENDS!! I replaced mine and the steering was soo much tighter I was amazed. A lot less shaky at high speeds too. And really easy to do yourself.
They were oem but I bought them from someplace online for $15 each.

thanks</TD></TR></TABLE>
the tie rod end comes as one piece. plus you wouldnt want to go through the trouble of just replacing the ball joint, cuz you'd need a hydrolic press. another thing with these tie rod ends, once you replace them youre gonna need an alignment. once you take off the tie rods, youre alignment is gonna be off, uless you can put it on exactly how it was before but that's impossible cuz every tie rod isnt made exactly like the next one. so get those alignments and save money on tires.

if you dont move the location of the locking nut then you wont have get an alignment, just crack the nut but leave it where it is on the threads, then unscrew the tie rod end, when you put the new one on it will be in the same position as the old one... autozone sells tie rods for 25$ per side, no core charge, lifetime warantee. you can do the install yourself in like a hour or two.
