215/50-15, has anyone tried this size on a R before?
I could not sleep cause I can hear the rain outside and was thinking how unsafe my bald *** Azenis are going to be getting to work tomorrow.
My thoughts were to try a new size tire but was wondering how a 215/50-15 would fit on the car, I do have the rotas which are 15 x 6.5 so they would fit the rim but unsure how they would do on the car its self.
I did a little research and found that the 215/50 is not that far off from the stock ... 215/50VR15 88 V SL 160 A A 1235lbs. 44psi rim6.5" Sect.Width8.5" TreadWidth7.6" OverallDiam.23.6" RevsPerMile 891... but there are not too many tires to choose from
Or I could just go with the 205/50-15 Sumitomo HTRZ and have not many worries about the size or weather... and the price is just right
What do you think?

And what size do your run on a 8J rim ? 305 ?
We are not allowed to run a 225 tyre on a 7J rim because the rubber is oversized and is unstabil at high speeds... For exact driving the sidewall has to be stiff.
I guess 255 on a 6J rim is the slalom-version if it`s not allowed to take a wider rim.

Ummm.... is 115 down the front straight at VIR high speed enough? Or 100+ through the kink at CMP? **** i even put two off on my exit there... No problems at all.

I'm running 215/50r15 SP 5000's on my stock rims. No probs, love 'em.
I also run 225/45r16 Toyo T1-S on 16x7.5 OZ F-1 Cups. They initially rubbed the fender due to the offset of the wheel, but I rolled the rear fenders and that eliminated that prob.

No. It's quite stable. I originally got them for winter use. Becuase I was running with the wider 16" foot print and OD, I decided to try to keep fairly close with my winter rubber. I've had one T1-S that is a nail magnet ( and I'm no longer affiliated with Toyo so I have to pay a much higher price to replace it), so I've been running the Dunlop's for the last 10 months solid.
I have noticed in extreme instances that their grip fades, compared to the Toyo's, but 99.9% of the time have been very predictable, and are ideally suited to my daily driver.
Besides, that wider footprint looks so much better on that car.

Just out of curiosity, please, do you mean EU drivers when you say, "we"?
On the street, there are many of us ITR drivers who are using 215-45-16 Azenis on 16x7J wheels, and a 215 Azenis is close to someone else's 225.
Moreover, I'm aware that many H1 and H2 Honda Challenge drivers are using 225-45-15, 225-50-15 and 225-50-16 Hoosiers and Kumho Ecsta and Victoracers on 7J rims.
To have a blanket EU regulation saying you can't put 225 section tyres on 7J rims seems...well..."not thoroughly well considered" is the most polite thing I can think of. LOL...
</TD></TR></TABLE>
But this is true.. I can`t speak for Europe but for Germany...
The widest tire we are allowed to run on stock rims is 205. We have the so called "TÜV" that has to inspect every mod you do which leads you away from stock parameters...And if you don`t get permit, there will be no insurance-coverage and you get the risk of paying $$$
A wider tire size is not allowed because of safety standards..

This is the main point. Manufacturer's recommendation is the best thing to follow. That's why I run 225 Toyo RA1s on 7" rim.

As for the size fitting 215/50-15 It should have no problems, Back in the early 90's the mustang Gt was running 225/60-15 on a 6.5 rim and that was stock from the factory...
This is why I think a 215 on a 6.5 rim would be fine if not very good.
So any other thoughts on what kinda tires and sizes?

Rob, what kind of tire are you looking for? Something not so seriously sticky for street use? 215/50/15 is just an odd width and 205/50/15 is much more common. I plan to use 195/50/15 PZeros for street use with my OEM wheels.
I really have no idea what I want to do, I still have my stock wheels for whatever and I have my Rotas for whatever. I would like to keep the Rotas on most of the time but the extra 0.5 inch is benifical for HPDEs and such so that would eliminate the stock wheels for "racing" no?
I had in mind the Sumitomos HTRZs (205/50-15)
for street and then what ?

Keep that idea going man. Use your OEMs (15x6) for street and go for those HTRZs, Yokohama ES100s, or whatever on those wheels. Hell, why not save a few bucks and do 195/50s for street. Use your Rotas with Azenis or your choice of sticky HPDE tires.
My plan is to use my 195/50 PZeros (soon to be installed and $50 from Tire Rack btw) on OEMs for street.
Another idea is these for your OEM wheels, Rob.... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...1=yes
You don't need ultimate grip on the street like Azenis offer, plus they should do fine on rainy days.
