so you want to gut your hatch....... heres some info

here is some info on how much weight you're actually saving. i am a firm believer that weight reduction is one of the best mods you can do. when my std was stock, i was able to gain 5mph out of every gear. this is my 2nd gutted hatch. i didn't destroy it this time while gutting so if i ever wanted to "ungut" i could do so w/o using duct tape
once everything was pulled out, i tried my best to weigh it on a bathroom scale. quite a challenge b/c its a shitty way of weighing odd shaped objects, however it should pose a ballpark illustration of interior component weight.
when gutting its easiest to start from the back and move to the front. everything is pieced on in layers, pull off the top layers first and work your way down. this is common sense. take your time don't brake anything in case you need it later or you want to sell it.
as some of you may know, my 88 std got hit on monday:
so on thursday i was able to pick this up:

1st mod was this:
i took pictures of the scale for as many piece as i could i believe im missing 2 pics of some random pieces of plastic or a bag of bolts or something. i should have weighed all the plastic together and all the hardware together but didn't. (bags of hardware are taped to the corresponding plastic panel, im not going to mix **** up).
here is a run down of the heaviest things in your hatch (interior wise i haven't pulled door panels yet I'll post their weight tomorrow.), heaviest 1st (from a 1990 automatic dx
):
Seats: 32lbs each
Spare tire: 23lbs
backseat, back support: 20lbs
floor mats: 8lbs (i had 8lbs of mats, you prolly wont
)
front carpet w/ sound-deadening: 8lbs
rear seat cushion: 8lbs
rear seatbelts and hardware: 6lbs
list goes on: heres pics of what i weighed and their weights. if nothing showed up on the scale, i considered it to be 1lb. not accurate but sort of accounts for any margin of error. also im not pushing down on anything, im trying to balance it so i can get it weighed. obviously pushing down would increase its presumed weight and ruin the purpose of this write up.

(that board doesn't weight ****)

in all i pulled about 159lbs of weight. if you go by the 100lbs = 1 tenth rule this is .159 sec saved in the 1/4. however, i always felt that a spare tire was a tenth in a 4th gen <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://images.h

Riiiight. I've always wondered. FYI, a better way to just the weight would be to weigh yourself, then pick up the object and weight both of you.
(You + object) - You = Object's weight
Should be somewhat more acurate that what you did.
Mad props for taking the time, anyway.

Nice, I'm gonna do the same this summer.
Just wondering though, did you run into any problems removing the rear "trays"? I had a nut come un-glued or welded on the back making it impossiable to removethe bolt (Its the middle bolt) . I can cram my hand back there through the tail light access pannel but not sure if I can fit a pliers to hold the nut. Any one have any suggestions?

Okay, I'll try to describe this better. You know the 2 plastic pieces that the rear privacy cover fits inbetween? Thats what I'm talking about. Theres either speakers or a shallow useless rectangle to keep junk in. Theres 3 bolts holding 'em inplace, the nut of the middle bolt is spinning w/the bolt. The nut is located in the body and I can cram my hand up there through the tail light access panel but its difficult to get pliers up there to hold the nut. Seeing as you've stripped 2 interiors have you run into this problem or know of a solution that doesn't wreck the plastic?
I'm tempted to cut the head of the bolt off and deal w/it when ALL the trim is out of my way.

G2turbo_terror - I know what bolt you're talking about, and I know what your having trouble with. Although I've stripped a couple cars before too and have never ran into this problem before. like you said, id probably just grind the head of the bolt off.
my std didn't even come with those trays...
I've been wrestling with the weight issue in my hatch... I'm going to start autocrossing it on the 19th (I'm already pre-registered for the next 8 races) but it's also my daily driver and I like my creature comforts, I've added a ton of dynamat to the doors, power windows, a subwoofer enclosure that's fiberglassed into the spare tire well so it's not removeable, among other things. All in all It's weighing in at 2500lbs with me in it (me=280lbs). not good!
I'm thinking I'd be better off getting a second hatch for racing than to try to strip it on race day and load it back down again for daily driving.

Stripping your car will put you in a mod class. not good. Leave the interior in.

just wanted to point out that the only way you are going to gain MPH out of a gear, is to change the gearing in the tranny (or get bigger tires/wheels)

I don't know about all that, With my sub and rear seats in, I never made it past 115 on the highway. I took the sub, amp, Rear seats, And front passenger seat out, I was able to bury the speedo (Best guess is 125 max)... Mind you this took a long time and many many miles of w.o.t.. Does that mean I changed my gearing or wheel size? Nope... I know alot of people are gonna say bullshit, But they can kiss my ***, I have better things to do than be a stunna yo. oh, And I only did it twice, The second time my o2 crapped on me and the car died on the side of the road. Oh well, Whatever. Nice write up man, Thanks for taking the time and energy to help us fellow 4g lovers out.
Yeah being in S mod sucks specially when your on 13 inch skinnies with no suspension work done. I'm just started autox as well and I'm learning the hard way but that is all going to change very soon after I get the suspension and Azenis.

I think I'm gonna be in a mod class anyway because I "swapped" a D16A6 from a 90 Si into my 91 Std

That is legal for STS this year (street tire class with suspension work). Otherwise, with interior, you will be in street mod (motor and suspension work class) which is much more forgiving than an actual mod/prepared class (without interior) where there are cars that have absolutely nothing stock and very wide hoosiers.

most local law agencys hate imports because they are driven by retarded teenagers who think every stop light it a race track, cant drive for ****, have loud stereos, endanger others.
gutted honda w/ a d series worth it: yes
b series: yes
boosted H22: yes
ive never had an officer get pissed bc i didnt have an interrior. then again ive only been pulled twice in the hatch, none of which were b/c of irradic driving speeding etc.
"clean" is nice, if i want to be comfortable i'll take the tahoe.
"nitrousDreams".... some of us dont need the juice to be quick.

Well honestly I can say that in dallas cops look at my car that is gutted and will pull me over all the tiem. I get pulled over for anything and everything. And everytime, the cops ask me why my interior is gone. Most of it is from when the car was stolen, then I just gutted the rest. But I get pulled over and never get any tickets, but the cop always checks my vin to be the same as the one on the insurance card, and tells me its stolen car, lol. OR asks if it is. but yea I dont care, i rarely get tickets in taht car so its alright.

Werd. When some state trooper nailed me it wasn't for no interior it was for my blinkers not working right and ricer related crap like that (in my case a harness wasn't plugged into the fuse box).

ive had cops ask me why i didnt have an interrior. the water damage excuse works wonders. having a lack on interrior is not against the law. i dont see how a cop could use lack of an interrior as means to make a traffic stop.
"do you know why i pulled you over?"
"yes i was doing 38 over"
"no, you have no interrior"
"Bullshit, yes i do!"

i think i could put down a 14 all motor. but yeah i rely on the bottle. no other way i have found in this world to go as fast for the same price. cuz we have all heard before .. in the words of that guy from that movie .. "Wining is wining"
