Default cam timing off? fire out the throttle body!

Ok, I just finished droppin in a GSR in my crx. I went to start it up and it just kept cranking. It sounded like it wanted to start buy kept struggling. After cranking it a couple times my friend noticed smoke coming out of the throttle body, and sometimes even a flame would shoot out. Any helpful ideas?

makes sure your motor is set to tdc, both the head and the block. my friend bought a used jdm motor that seemed to have skipped a tooth. it wouldnt idle until we set the bottom to tdc and then seperately dialed the cams back to zero (also tdc). huge improvement...it idled well and ran strong on the first try.

when the crank pulley is set to TDC, my exhaust cam gear is set perfect to TDC, but the TDC dot on the intake cam gear is a little lower(about half a tooth off, also, these are skunk2 gears)is there any way I can check the actual camshaft itself to see if they are at TDC?? I heard they have holes that are supposed to line up with the cam holder?

B18B has holes that line up with the cam holder. VTEC engines don't have this feature.

At TDC- pop the valve cover off and make sure the INTAKE and EXHAUST valves are closed on #1. Also, check the ROTOR on the distributor to see if it's pointing to #1 on the cap.

thats not true. both my 1st gen b16 head and 00 ITR head have holes in the cam rails for aligning the camshafts. both the b16 cams and ITR cams have the holes in them for doing just this.
