Default painting my wheels today

ill get some pics up when the paint dries solid, i used high gloss black dupli color engine enamle, i figured the engine enamel would hold up better since if its designed to hold up to the heat of an engine block it should be able to take the abuse a wheel sees, plus being black i shouldnt have to clean them as often

i was thinking of doing the engine block and head before the new stuff goes in...whats a good color?

I used graphite grey honda body spray paint from Advance Auto Parts. I don't think it matters how heat resistant the paint is that you use. Your wheels aren't going to get that hot. I would just worry about putting on as many layers as you can. I put on 6 layers, and it's holding up well. There are a couple rock chips here and there, but you're not going to be able to avoid that...even with engine block enamel.

i used almost a whole can of primer very well evenly coated and didnt run a drop, i gave it about 10 min between each full coat, i used about half a can of the black and half a can of clear coat, i would say there is atleast 8-10 coats on

when i do the next 3 im not gonna try to strip all the original finish off im just gonna rough it up with some 80 grit and use the deep fill primer and then do the same number and amounts of coats and such

Your wheels aren't going to get that hot.
Go drive around for a bit, then do a few moderate stops from ~50-60. I dare you to hold your hand on the wheel for 10 seconds after that

The wheels can get hot, but not nearly as hot as the Engine would get.

because metal conducts heat, and the wheels are bolted to the brake rotors, that's why. I would suggest stripping all the original finish off all the wheels. I only scuffed mine with sandpaper and the paint is flaking off around the outer edges of my wheels (right next to the tire sidewall). This is because I didn't get that part with the sandpaper.

i made sure to cover every exposed area with adequate paint and i took the tires off the rim before painting it...i used a sanding sponge also which makes it real easy to get all the areas

i would recommend powdercoating your wheels, spray paint will prob chip off and look bad..... spray painting is the cheapo way out

Spray painting can come out really nice if done right. Good call on using the high temp enamel.

you wouldn't believe how many people have asked me about my wheels because they couldn't tell if they are powdercoated or painted. Yes the paint is flaking on mine, but that's because I did not prep them correctly. $4 can of spray paint 0wnz j00

like i said i roughed it up with 80 grit sanding sponge and followed it up with almost a full can of dupli color deep fill metal primer, very evenly coated and no runs at all, if the paint doesnt have a good base to stick to it wont stick, i also emptied half a can of high temp clear coat also

i would love to have black powdercoated wheels but i cant even imagine how much it would cost...i only paid $75 each for the wheels

Damn...that's a bit course for the job. Using 400-320 grit does the job perfectly.

I painted mine with about 3-4 coats each, and only took 2 cans. That was back in June, and they're still holding up with no peeling or chipping.

With all that sanding, make sure youre wearing a respirator.

EDIT:
out of curiosity, has anyone here done the forementioned and masked off the edge to leave a chrome lip?
