tranny making whinding noise?
hey guys,
I was just wondering if anyone knew what the problem is if my tranny is whinding in only first and second gear. I have a 90 Civic and just put in a racing clutch with my DX tranny. Any advice please. The noise is getting very irritating. Thanks.

it sounds like a main shaft bearing. i had this problem a couple times . does it go away when you push the clutch in?
Is it only above, say, 3000rpm? A Honda mechanic told me that noise is the input shaft. The tranny can still go a long time making that noise functioning very well (mine doesn't grind any gears with 162,000 miles, it just whines), but a rebuild is the only cure.

My tranny is making the whine noise also.. but it does go away when I step on the clutch.. so it should be the main shaft bearing thats jacked up then??
it also can be the input shaft bearings as well--mine has made horrible noise since I got the car at 100k miles, it now has 182k--shifts fine, no grinds, just sounds like ****---deal with it.
My tranny makes high-pitched whining noises no matter what gear I'm in or whether or not the clutch is depressed. I need a tranny rebuild
Depends when your tranny is whinning....if you are at a stop and with the clutch out, that's caused by the throw-out bearing.
When you are moving, the whinning, sometimes can be stopped by changing out the fluids, but I have had my tranny go bad, due to a bad main bearing.

Trinity probably nailed it.
Sorry fellas but a simple tranny fluid change isn't going to remedy a whining tranny.
If it makes a whining almost slight roaring noise with the clutch out, but hushes once the clutch is in then like Trinity said it's probably the mainshaft bearings.
It *could* be the clutch throwout bearing, but really the more common thing for miled-up D-Series trannies is the mainshaft bearings.
I've torn through a few D-Series trannies and let me tell you from experience:
If you continue to drive a tranny that's whining you will be left stranded soon. I had two D trannies making that noise and I ignored it for too long. Both trannies locked me out of key gears like 1,2 and reverse. I drove the car with only 3,4,and 5 for a week until I located a new Si tranny. One tranny I had locked me out of every gear.
Either take the tranny out and rebuild it, or just buy a used tranny.
Ideally you should pull the tranny and rebuild it with the following parts:
Main shaft bearings (2)
Countershaft bearings (2 or 3 depending on tranny)
Diff bearings (2)
Mainshaft seal (1)
Shifter shaft seal (1)
Expect to pay no more than $200.00.
Yes you can find used trannies for maybe $150.00 or so, but how do you know that they won't crap out soon too? Screw that, it's not worth it IMO.
That should put the tranny back in good shape for another 50K or much more if you're nice to your tranny.
I've had B-Series main bearings go bad too, but I promptly pulled the tranny and rebuilt it because B trannies are hard as hell to find and are very expensive.
Good luck!

I had that same problem and ignored it...well my tranny froze up on me this weekend and as a result the swap has been moved up to today...LOL
so dont ignore that sound...even tho its a bitch to check go ahead and @ least put some fresh fluid in the tranny

lost projects sed this "Depends when your tranny is whinning....if you are at a stop and with the clutch out, that's caused by the throw-out bearing. "
that isnt right. if you push clutch in and it whines it *could* be the throw out.

I am yet another person who recently put in a 6puck clutch, and about 1000 miles after the install, the "wobbling/whining" started.
Would it be the actual installation of the tranny somehow would make the bearing go bad, or would it be the harshness of the 6 puck? I am a VERY easy shifter, and even with the quick engagement of the 6 puck, I was still able to shift quite smoothly.
What is going on?

SO do you have any idea what maybe causing these bearings to go bad?

i had the bearing whining noise in 1st gear with my car. it also had a metal rubbing sound. well i pulled the tranny and craked the case open. what i found was that my diff bearing had gone bad and my final drive was rubbing the clutch housing. this produced a number of metal flakes and caused (my belief here) my mainshaft bearing to fail.
i'd like to hear if other people have seen the final drive rub on their tranny case...
i have all these symptoms also. Does anybody else notice that the noise goes away after long trips? If i drive my car for an hour or so, the noise goes away at idle, but will start acting up after about 45 minutes without the engine running.
try and check your trans fluid. i wouldnt know exactly what it is, but my friend had the same problem, and his trans sounded like a supercharger. couple races later he blew his trans. aight
If your tranny whines at idle with the clutch disengaged then its your t/o bearing spining on the input shaft.....guys with the clutch disenaged your engine isnt even connected/spinning the tranny so that is a clutch issue...
witht he clutch engaged and holding it and it whines or through a gear then its your main input shaft bearing or rear output shaft bearing either or can go bad due to old age....a new clutch in the car will put more stress on the transmission and also increase shaft endplay which will cause a input or output shaft bearing to go bad.
