does performance intake & other performance parts take away from good gas mileage?

Not at all. You should see a big improvement over stock.
Better breathing (through a less restrictive intake and exhaust) will make it easier for the engine to make power, and will take less energy to do it. (I know someone can explain it better than I)
One of my old cars, 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T, V6, 5-speed got 25 mpg stock. I added an AEM cold air intake, and a Flowmaster exhaust, and got 33 mpg highway.
Yes, you will have better mileage. Unless you are at full-throttle to get up to cruising speed all the time because the car feels faster.

you will get better gas mileage as long as you only mess with airflow (intake, header, exhaust, cam, intake manifold, throttle body, port & polish), but when you upgrade the fuel system (fuel pump, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, ecu fuel maps), then it can go waaaaay down, so its really all in tuning. basically, the more efficient you make your engine (more hp), the better the gas mileage it gets. this is also as long as you stay N/A, when you go turbo or s/c, say bye bye to gas mileage (i get about 10mpg on a 98 gs-r)

that is so true Its not hard to understand , dialing it in is the hard part.
I changed some stuff on my engine, ignition, exaust, and I'm trying to tune without buying a air/ fuel controler .Still runs ok just a little rich, lost 40-50 mi. on full tank.
but still good daily driver .

When you go fast, you will waste gas...
performance parts in my opinion, wastes a lot of gas... my stock set-up was the bomb, cuz a full tank would last me two weeks.. now i'm spending 5 bucks a day for gas.. sucky sucky
