Default Turbo Project: Girlfriends 2000 Si.

My g/f gets a huge tax return, and she wants to turbo her 2000 Si. It has about 30k miles on it and is in perfect condition, and is stock.

Here is the thing. I will be the #1 person working on it and chosing the parts.

She thinks she will be getting about $2000+ for her tax return, and if we need another 1000 that's no big deal. But lets just say we have 2000 for now unless we need more.

Ok. I need help picking the parts out. I don't really want to buy a kit, because they seem so expensive. I've heard you can build your own and possibly reduce the cost of things a bit.

The main goal is to get a decent turbo setup on and working, then add modifications from there. Since her engine is stock, she'll be boosting about 5-8 psi I'm thinking.

So. Can you guys give me some input and suggestions on things like:

Turbo manifold
The turbo
BOV
Wastegate
Etc.

And we'll need to tune it I'm sure. What would work well for tuning? Nothing big like hondata + boost, but if needed to convert to OBD1, we can do that.

Revhard mani
turbonetics t3/to4e
tial 35mm wastegate
custom your own piping itll be the cheapest route to take
if you what function over form go with a tial bov(if you like the woosh noise go with the blitz dd)
intercooler is in the air anywhere from 300 to 800.

you can get all these parts from tony1 i know for a fact that he has all of that in stock except for maybe the turbo.

i personally would say to buy a kit because that way you do not have to deal with finding all of the flanges and fittings. but from there you will need a safc, injectors, and f/p. i would also really recomend a low compression head gasket. the b16s compression is way too high for any boost. anythin over 9.9-1 is going to detonate over .5 bar and your motor has 10.2-1=no good for boost.
over all:
t3/4e or b
custom piping
greddy type-s
spearco small front mount
tial 35mm wastegate
greddy 60mm boost and a/f gauge
safc
370+ injectors
255 f/p
3mm head gasket

Dont forget that his budget is between $2000-$3000, if you buy part by part and all the best components then you are gonna be going over $2000 pretty quick.

But it will still be cheaper than buying a crappy kit!

Piece it together, its what i did, and cheaper.

Here is an idea for you to look at:

New Garrett T3/t04e Turbo - $525
Manifold (inline pro) - $480
Tial Wastegate 35mm - $200
Intercooler (whatever u want) -~ $400
BOV (get a used one ) - $130
Downpipe (get a revhard w/ no flange ) - $100
Oil lines and fittings, at most ~ $100
Hi Flow cat - $70
Welding...say at most $100
Spark Plugs - $13

viola, you are only at @ $2100

now you gotta decide about piping and your fuel setup....

I like bling bling so i dump out the high cost of drag 3 piping. so say $350 for piping

Then the most important thing....fuel setup. I wouldnt trust a FMU, if you are too cheap to go for the EMS or Hondata, Go w/ the AFC hack and some RC 440 injectors......your stock fuel pump will be ok w/ this

piping - $350

AFC hack and rc injectors ~ $500

thats just under $3000 for a really good setup (great quality parts) , the only thing you may want to change w/ that setup down the road is the standalone......

you will need atleast a boost guage, and i would recommend maybe the techedge wideband......

how about ignition? or timing control? from my understanding if you are gonna d the VAFC hack you're gonna want those(timing).

I didn't say anything about a kit we all know it will be cheaper than a kit, I said buying stuff piece by piece will put you over the $2000 mark really fast. You also need to factor in tuning costs and al the little itty bitty stuff (oil, coolant, errr other stuff).

not if you are only running 5-7 psi.

if you are going to fork out the bucks for that stuff, get the damn hondata or ems.

edit: the hack is just a good replacement for the fmu, you cant control the timing, which is bad, but for the broke *** people, it works good as long as you dont run an insane amount of boost.

The only reason I mentiong timing control, is from what I have heard of the hack, it advances timing, or that it doesn't retard (forget which). But some people have been able to manually adjust timing with the distributor to compensate a lil.

Personally I think if you plan on boosting higher in the future go with a standalone. With the hack you'll end up having to sell some of the stuff later on, because as most people know (and as Stevo mentioned) the hack doesn't work well at higher boost.

the safc and vafc only adjusts fuel (and the vafc also adjusts vtec switchover), thats all, it does nothing w/ timing. the only way to adjust timing is via the distributor.

The way i see it...if you take good care of your stuff, you could buy and sell the AFC for the same price (if you buy it used)....that way if you are broke now, you can use the hack, then save up money and then purchase a standalone later down the road, then turn around and sell the AFC

I know that the AFC's dont adjust timing, that's why I'm saying that doing the hack without any form of timing retardation is bad.

EDIT: what I've probably read from people is that they said that they have had stock timing, when in act they should have had it retarded.

Hack worked for me up to 12psi which was the MAP limit. But, I had the comfort of running on 9.6:1 CR whereas the window of error is alot more narrow with 10.2:1 so you'll want to be very cautious with boost spike!

I'm thinking off selling my kit, and you are in my area, let me know if interested, I can give you details.

2 ways of running the "hack" (don't know why people call it that) more safely would be to:

* Retard base timing a few deg.
* Run 100 octane gas when going over 7 psi

the thing that will break the bank is your fuel management.
either u go afc hack, hondata, or FMU.....each has its pros and cons.

cheapest being the FMU and expensive for the hondata.

im looking into going turbo really soon and im going to peice it together because a kit will only give you so much
in the end , granted yes its nice and convinent, but i know ill end up upgradeing everything anyway eventually.
so thats why im piecing mine together starting with a t60-1 and build the rest of my set up around that. now im looking at a
lil over 5grand but its going to make mad power. i hope.

the b16s compression is way too high for any boost. anythin over 9.9-1 is going to detonate over .5 bar and your motor has 10.2-1=no good for boost.
first of all thats not true...10.2 or whatever the compression may be will work great with proper tuning...and in fact will make more power than lower compression...

like i said its really all in the tuning...you can easily do it for 2000 or even a little under...

revhard or maxrev mani/downpipe-550
t3/t4-450-550
IC-400
piping-100
tial 35mm w/g-200
bov-150
dsm 450's w/ vafc hack- 350
oil return/ feed

and you should be set

Go with the afc hack for fuel management...i put 278 to the wheels running the afc hack and a/f ratio was near perfect all the way. 250 for the afc at most, 50 for dsm injectors, and about 3 bucks for the 10ohm resistors from radio shack. Also, send an instant message to Earl (or Ninesecrx) about a PWR intercooler. I got an awesome IC from him for 335 shipped.
