Expansion slots. Turbo guys.. Take a peek...
I will be receiving my turbo manifold very soon. Its identical to this one. I have read about expansion slots on the manifold that will help prevent cracking. I just wanted to make sure that this is where i should make the expansion slots.

I figured just run a band saw through it.. that would be sufficient??? Am i on the right track?

Where did you read about these 'expansion slots'?

they are there to relieve some stress from the expansion and contraction when it gets hot and cold. and that is the place i see them when they are on manifolds.

Re: Expansion slots. Turbo guys.. Take a peek...
the problem actually occurs when the runners are made out of a material that expands more rapidly than the material that makes up the flange. In the case of the max rev manifold shown (at least thats what it looks like to me) the manifold's runners are made out of stainless and the flange is made out of mild steel. Stainless expands more rapidly than mild steel. Without the expansion slots the runners would be putting stress on the flange and cause it to warp when it gets hot.
Pretty sure thats the logic behind it. The manifold builders on here should comment on it too.
I decided to cut them in my manifold, I figured they can't hurt. I think a bandsaw would do the job just fine, and yes you marked them in the right spot

right, those are the correct locations and a bandsaw works just fine. u may have to surface the flange after its cut. sometimes when the runners are welded to the flange, the heat can warp/distort/stress it. during and after the cut the flange trys to return to its original position and the runners can become uneven. this only really happens when there are gaps that are filled between the flange and the runner. or u could just cut the slots around the bolt holes

Ok, so there should be three slots then?? all the way through.?? Or should i just slot the holes for the head only???
Getting mixed answers.. SOme say to cut where i drew, and some say to cut just the bolt holes.....
any more help??
And you have to be kidding me about the picture LILXVTECXPWR. If your gonna cry about me using your picture ill remove it.

Out of curiosity, do cast mainfolds like the inline pro need to have slots cut as well?

[Modified by DIY_Racing, 4:15 PM 12/26/2002] ok DIY you see where you have the middle red line? it is right in the middle of the bolt hole. cut all three right down the center! i am surprised a maxrev manifold was not cut. and the reason that the fullrace one is not cut is because it went to vegas not finnised. that was acctually the only thing that wasnt done to it, but i assure you it did get cut before shipping to a customer!

yes, cut em all the way through. you want to do this for 1. to relieve stress created during welding and 2. to allow the manifold to "breathe". that is expand and contract at its own will. if the flange is not cut, the chance of a weld breaking goes up drastically. do yourself a favor and cut the flange

what is the difference b/w cutting down the middle like on the max-rev as opposed to cutting at every single hole like the full-race?
