No speedometer after Quaife install??
I just got a Quaife in my 00 Si and now the speedometer won't work, what could be the issue? Everything seems to be hooked up properly. If people could give me some ideas on what and how to check things I would be very thankful. If somebody suggest the VSS could they tell me how to check if its bad.
Sounds to me like a speed sensor problem look around the speed sensor area and make sure all electrical connections are connected
Did it work before the install??
If it did then thats not it...The reason i say that is because you have a 00 si...chances of that going bad is slim....for being a 00..
the only thing i can think of is you forgot to put the speedo ring back on the Quaife..
Or you dont have the speedo pushed all the way in...IF you take out the speedo you might be able to see down the hole and look for some type of Gear looking thing if thats not there the the ring isnt there..
Good luck
Thanks
Ross

Do you have a CEL perhaps throwing a code 17?? IF so check to make sure the VSS connector is plugged onto the VSS.
Exactly what I was thinking if all the electrical checks out good... Latez

Did you install the gear on the Quaife before you put it inside the tranny? You have to pull the old one off and press it on to the wuaife.
Edit: Oh sorry, someone else already said that but that's where I would look first

I know some people have already said this, but it looks like they didnt install your spedo gear. See the gear Im heating up here? That is what you have to press off of the stock diff and then press it on the quaife.
Im willing to bet that is your problem, and not an electrical problem like everyone is talking about.

Tim,
I'm going with the other guys in that the speedo gear was not installed. You can pull the VSS sensor out of the trans and look inside. You should be able to see/feel the helical gear on the diff housing. If you wish I can help you check it out.
Breaking that gear sucks....like Ralphie said you can't buy it separate of the housing. Be careful

Heat = thermal expansion
I use a small pulley puller to remove the gear always worked fine for me without heat. I install by heating the gear in the oven and putting the diff in the freezer. It installs fairly well after that....I still use a little machine pressure to make sure the gear is fully seated though.

I was heating the gear up to pull it off. Notice I was heating the gear itself, and not the shaft itself. I was easy to pull it off, the put it on the quaife right after before it cools. If you have access to a press, then you dont need to do this.
To the original problem, if you still have your OEM diff then see if the gear is on there. And like the previous poster said, do NOT damage because you cant buy that gear by itself. You have to buy the entire diff which is very expensive.

since we're on the topic here ~
when you install the LSD, is there anything special you need to do besides for swap over the ring gear, spedo, bearings? I've heard you need to "preload" it or something, which is what my honda mechanic said. I'm going to be replacing mine, and my helms manual is on the way..
can someone explain the preloading process?

Maybe this thread might help. There are some links in it that might help.

Man, that reminds me, when I did my Quaife, I was pulling my gear off with a 3 arm puller and one of the arms was not on right and as I tightened the puller with a wrench, I heard this crunch, look down and the one arm chipped the gear!!!!!!!!! It was just a small piece and it looked like it would not affect the gear overall. So I changed the puller to a two arm puller and the gear come off without a problem. It worked fine when I got the car back together. Scared the hell out of me.
unbolt the VSS and see if its engaging properly with the ring gear. Its entirely possible that whoever installed your dif screwed something up or maybe didn't swap the speed sensor gear over to the Quaife (in which case he's a real bonehead and you should make him do it right)
P.S. Yeah, what everyone above said
