how to convert external coil to internal (Hybriders)
This is a basic "how to" showing the steps I took to change a internal coil from a f22a to an external coil h22a distributor. What makes this conversion tricky, is that the USDM h22a Distibutor used comes originally set-up for an external coil.
On the right side of this picture is the (internal coil) distributor from the f22. We will take the parts from this and add to the H22a (external coil set up) distributor on the left.
Here is what the internals look like side by side.
Start by removing the coil. Disconnect the wires leading to the coil. There are 2 phillips head screws that hold the coil in place. Transfer the coil to the h22a distributor housing.
Now we will get into the wiring. This step shows to disconnect the green wire from the h22a ignitor.
In this next picture You can see the jumper (yellow wire/coil negitive) That was removed from the f22a distributor and in place on the h22a.
With the coil in place and the negative jumper attached, we will now work on the positive connection. This following picture shows that right next to the green wire (that was disconnected) is the black with yellow stripe. You will cut this wire aproximately half way between the connector and the plastic tubing. From the f22a distributor you will disconnect the same wire and cut in the same place. This should leave you with a "Y" connection with the connector for the ignitor on one end and a ring terminal on the other. The 2 cut ends will be soldered together. Transfer this wire to the H22a distributor. This will be the only (non factory) connection.
Strip the black/yellow stripe wire and solder and heat shrink the ends together.
Back to this picture for a second. The disconnected green wire can be left in place just be sure to tape it up good so it wont get caught on any of the rotating parts. I however cut it off at the tubing and pull the wire out of the distributor all together.
Here is a shot of the connector with the green wire removed. This wire is completely removed all together as an extra precaution.
This is what the completed distributor should look like. Almost completely factory.

Can I just ask you why you did this? With my h22a, i had to convert from an internal to an external to run an msd ignition. Whats the advantage of going reverse? Just curious, thanks

In this case it was a USDM h22a being put in a 90 Accord. This was the easiest fix. Distributor question pop up frequently so this was on of the solutions to an unusual conversion. I will be posting how to do the extrernal coil conversion later today if time permits.

yeah i had to do something like this on my, cause one was internal and the other was external. then i tried to pull off the plugs from the lx and the ex and they were different than the h22, worst off one had like five wires and a square plug and the other was three wires and round plug but all the harnesses were different. i still get a headache thinking of what we did. .. hhehehe i used parts from a B18 coil and stuff to finally get it working

Hi, I have a 93 prelude 2 f22 and dropping a H22aJDM using f22 harness. The f22a has an external coil while H22AJDM has internal. Just the opposite of the post. What do you recommend I do with the extra coil connector.

OK i have a JDM H22A i want to install an EXTERNAL coil How do i do this? I tried alot of methods but it doesnt add up, BTW its a 1996 H22A, origionally internal coil.

I figured that, after I changed it. I thought why do I have to change the dizzy if I'm not having changed anything about the motor!! So is there any good place to find descriptive, under the hood wiring diagrams for both the vehicles. I am at a loss here and the cluster will not plug into two of the three plugs on the passenger side coming out of the firewall. Im trying to scan over a couple of crap print outs to see if there is a colour change with in the three years. I would really like to plug her and get going. my last resort is to pull the harness.....

What chassis ? If it's a 4th gen accord it's practically plug n play. You just add 4 wires with their connectors, which really isn't all that hard.

I am not sure of wire colouration and position, hence the hunt for a descriptive wiring diagram I know that the main leads go to the fuse panel inside but there are different colour and I don't want to make a mistake. Cant afford it
