Richporter Performance Ignition Coil = Junk?
My car:
1992 Honda Prelude Si/4ws
H22A engine swap
Turbocharged
AEM EMS
The H22A came with a distributor with internal coil. The car's wiring harness supports an external coil. The H22A has no place to mount the external coil. I moved the battery to the trunk and bought a Richporter Technology distributor and external coil combination (TD61HPC). I mounted the coil to the battery tray.
The new distributor was properly installed and timed. Dwell is set at 40 degrees.
Symptoms:
The car idled better.
The car pulled low RPMs better.
The engine could NOT rev beyond 5500 RPM (redline = 6500).
After a few hours of (hard) driving, the coil open-circuited.
I put the stock distributor/coil back in and could easily rev to 6500.
I disassembled the Richporter coil and, inside, I found a coil marked TC-05A. This is a stock internal coil for Honda CRX distributors (TD-18U).
Questions:
Can anyone explain the better running, yet early failure?
Was I unlucky, or was I robbed?

How come you're only revving it to 6500? Seems way low even on a turbo setup.
CEL come on at all? Sounds like the coil isn't strong enough. I would just return the defective parts and go back to the stock distributor. Modify it for an external coil and get a cap to support it. I'm using a Crane coil and love it. But stick with a name you've heart of.
