Default Issues with Joe P Manual Boost Controller

I just put this thing in, and I can't get my boost lower than 8 psi! I have the .45 bar (6.5 psi) spring in my Tial. The MBC **** is right on the edge of falling out. Suggestions?

I don't think you can adjust the boost lower than what your wastegate is set at (i.e. it's spring).

8 psi vs. 6.5 psi

I wonder why you are sweating that.

I'm also looking at getting one of those MBC's, I have the same wastegate as you.

hes sweating cause he wants it lower than 8 psi, his spring is 6.5 psi.

*still wondering*

The airflow difference between the 2 boost levels is going to be small, 20 whp at the most (and that is being optimistic).

no need to wonder, maybe he wants to run less than 8 psi, less wear and tear on the motor,etc... who knows?

I have a shitty FMU and stock injector fuel setup, so, yes, there is a difference between 8 and 6.5. Also, it actually peaks somewhere around 8.5 or maybe 9 ....so I could use some help. Is there some weaker spring I could get or something?

autometer. it read 6.5 pounds with just the Tial, which is what that .45 bar spring should read. so....hmmm.

How much boost were you planning to set the controller at? I ask because 6.5 psi and 8psi are not that far apart and the airfllow difference is really small. If you dont feel comfortable boosting 1.5psi more than what you were boosting to start with i'd say you take the boost controller off and go back to 6.5psi. At least until you get better fuel mangement.

Save your money and make one. It's just $3 in parts from the hardware store.

I know it's not a huge difference of 6.5 to 8 (more like 8.5 or 9), but in an earlier thread I asked H-T's opinion on the limit of the FMU and stock injector setup. Most said 8 was too high, but 7 or less was ok. I plan on getting a better fuel setup soon, but I'd like to be safe in the meantime.

edit: here's that thread: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=342615

You have a inline pump right? I assume you do. Check your plugs for signs of leaning out, retard your timing, a egt gauge would be a good investment. But if you are worried that you might blow something because of lack of better fuel management i would just remove the boost controller and go back to 6.5 psi until you get your standalone. There's nothing worse than boosting away with the tought you might brake something, It ruins the whole experience (IMO). Peace of mind is priceless.

Yeah, I've decided to just go back to the wastegate til I get some bigger injectors and fuel tuning.... 6.5 lbs. ain't bad, but damn 9 felt great while it lasted, hehe.

Well in case anyone cares here's the response I received from Joe (P)ampena:

A manual boost controller cannot be used simply to increase spool up, it needs to add a restriction to the signal line in order to do so, which will then increase boost.. The higher the boost *increase*, the more the restriction, the quicker the spool .. That is why it is best to have a lower psi spring and use the MBC to increase the boost. It is pretty much "common knowledge" (no offense to you for not knowing ) amongst most tuners, therefore I do not have any special notes addressing this- that and since most people buy them to increase boost also .. I have had maybe 3 customers including you so far who have bought it with the
intentions of just increasing spool out of over 2000 so far, so it also really isn't on my mind too often either .. Actually, now that we are talking about it, I will make a note to add that to the FAQ section that will be added to my new site that is in the works..

He also mentioned there's a minimum 1 -1.5 lb. (2.5 lbs. for me) increase in boost with the Joe P. So keep that in mind, guys!

Actually, what I plan on doing is getting a lower psi spring for my Tial, and leaving the mbc on.
