Default mugen headgasket vs. oem h.g. big pics!!

well i blew a minor leak in my mugen headgasket which im blaming on the fact that i reused the old headbolts. anyway, here are some pics comparing the mugen gasket to the oem one:

old mugen(top), new oem(bottom)
bottom layer:

top layer:

now, after examining the two, to my untrained eye, the mugen piece looks exactly like the oem piece minus the top layer. i want to emphasize this is only a visual comparison. who knows, maybe mugen uses some kind of special headgasket materials or something, but i doubt it.

i was going to remove the middle layer, since thats what a few people have done sucessfully untill i noticed this. so i decided to do some experimenting and remove the top layer. im on stock gsr compression and only reving to itr redline so im not at high risk for blowing a good seal. i figure the worst case senario would be buying another headgasket, headbolt set and a sat. afternoon. best case senario: psudo mugen h.g. for half the price.

oem gasket w/ top layer removed:

some other fum pics:

between500-700miles. i didnt know at first, i thought my rings had just gone bad because i was losing a lot of oil. then i started noticing a little smoke at wot, then a couple weeks ago, about 3000 miles later, i noticed some little specs of oil in the coolant. it was also leaking coolant in#1 & #2. again. i blame this on reusisng the headbolts. maybe if i torqued them down more than spec it would have held. i dont know.

nope, stock mounts. i was going to use arp's but this was just a quick fix cause im low on funds. ill definitely use arp's when i have the time and money to rebuild.
