Default built d-series

I thinking about rebuilding my mini-me D16A6 motor. Here's what I'm thinking:

-D16A6 block
-D16Z6 head - ported n' polished
-D16Y8 intake manifold - port matched to head and TB
-D16A6 rods - shot-peened
-D16A1 pistons - from 88-89 Integ
-really aggressive cam - car isn't daily driver so idle doesn't matter
-valve springs and retainers
-big bore throttle body
-4-1 header with test pipe and high-flow exhaust

I'm trying to decide if all this will be worth it or would I be better off going B-series. Does anyone have anyone horsepower numbers on some built N/A d-series motors. or maybe some dyno plots. I want to stay N/A.

I'm looking for at least 165-170whp. What do you guys think?

you can easily hit those numbers. what kind of fuel management tho??? and what kind of ecu? are you going obd1??? can easily be done. I'm shooting for the same numbers with just a completely built d16y8 head to race specs. daily driven. it can be done

I would also convert to OBD-1 probably using a chipped P28 ECU

our head packages usually put out 135-140hp to the WHEELS on a stock block D16a6. with our built bottom ends, its usually pushing about 155-165 to the wheels. NON-VTEC.

Im not exactly sure, but I think the a1 pistons combined with the z6 head/a6 block would make compression TOO high... Im not too sure on this, any one else know?

Lightning motorsports has some inexpensive springs, retainers, and valves.

Springs 143
Valves 368
retainers 169

Zex has a Y8 cam for 200..id assume the Y6 is about the same.

Good luck on the build!!!

the Z6 head normally does 9:2.1 on a Z6 block. i think it goes up to 9:6:1, on the A6 block.... i think the A1 pistons will probably will take itto the 10's

any more than 50 hp on stock rods is not the way to go you have to have it tuned by somone that knows what they are doing to make 50hp+ on stock a6 rods last i feel dumping 900$ into rods and pistons is the way to go thats just me i get to aleep at night better knowing that my enving is gona take it

That's why I would shot-peen the rods. It won't make them bulletproof, but it should give them some more strength.

Also, I've heard A1 piston in a A6 block with a Z6 head will have high compression, but not too high for pump gas. The upper limit you can really run with 93 octane pump gas is about 12:1. I think this combo would be below 12:1.

Spade,

I was thinking about LS rods actually. What kind of machining do they need to fit and what years of the LS. I think its 90-91, but not sure.

I posted the same question a few weeks ago (B16 rods on a D16 motor) and I believe the consensus was that you have to machine 0.0175 off each side of the rod at the piston-end, and either use a bushing that Crower no longer makes, or use first-gen Toyota Supra pistons (they use the same diameter wrist pin as the D16).

it seems to me that you would not want to shave material off the rods as it would hinder their structural integrity. i thought you would be better off machining material off of the bottom of the block. i believe you would also want B16 rod bearings correct? let me know if i'm way off on this shizzle.

D16A6, Port n Polish the crap out of it(and some valvetrain work), milled head, ZEX stage 2 cam, Skunk2 Adj. Cam gear, Reprogrammable ECU, and more. That's what i will be doing. The D Series ownz! And yes, you could easily hit those numbers. the a6 is 100-103 whp STOCK!

any 90+ ls rod will work and it will work with your d16 pistons once machined because the LS rod is the same length as the d16 rod and the b16 is not.

But do you have to do anything to the rods or blocks to have them work in the A6 block? Oh I am talking about Ls rods.

yea, what machining has to be done to the LS rods for them to work with the D16 pistons?
