Need power steering to manual steering conversion info
There was a thread a while back regarding converting the ITR power steering to manual steering using some fittings and other parts. It involved looping the two fittings together using a hose and some sort of breather.
Anybody have a copy of that post or a how-to on the conversion?
Also, since some of you guys have been running this setup for a while I wanted to know how it is holding up/performing.

I'm running it without the breather, but drained 90% of the fluid. No problems so far, and gained some muscles!!!

George,
I want to put an ITR steering rack in my '92 CX. The CX rack's ratio is way too slow compared to the rack on my ITR.
I don't want to have power steering in the CX to save weight and to make the car easier to work on.

I don't have any problems with parking. It's as heavy as a Civic DX, even with the faster ITR rack.
I am doing the setup that Dropspeed (MattJ) posted. I used to have the breather on it but not anymore. That didn't work out. It split in two! That reservoir was gouged on the side and as soon as i pulled it out the thing was in two pieces. Don't know why. Oh well the breather makes it slightly easier but not worth the $ for it. Just loop the lines and drain some fluid out.
Question is how much fluid do i drain out? That is up to you and how easy you want the steering to be. As for myself i left a lot in there and it is pretty hard but i like it that way and have a piece of mind.

non-P/S blows for me. Daily driving sucks w/ no-P/S and autoX must suck w/ no-P/S. ITR has a pretty good P/S w/ with good feedback.
So you drained out 90% of your PS fluid. With little fluid in the system, can't that harm it in some way like metal to metal contact.

Can I ask a dumb question?
I've driven Bryan's car w/the power steering disabled, and I just don't understand how people drive these cars in everyday driving. I mean, you're bound to have to park the thing, sometime.
I'm wondering if anyone has exchanged his ITR steering rack for a '92-'95 DX (non-power) steering rack?
Does this work well, or is the ratio one that an ITR owner would not want?

I dont have any problems unless parallel parking and i rarely do that. and im not
that big of a guy. though from my experience, the bigger the guy is, the more
they whine and bitch about driving my car.

sorry even i read it i have no idea what this is for~
so is it same as no power steering? to have no PS you can just remove the belt right?
so this is to save up the weight?

but for that 3 hp i would turn my streering little easier.
last time i took the belt off for a day or 2 .. i found it was pretty dangerous for street.

-Dave, who has been without power steering for.. uhmm.. 1.5 years or so.
Was this the car's fault or the driver's?
actually "while" driving is cool but when i meant dangerous i was at a parking lot and i couldnt make a big/fast turn and other car was coming towards me and i had to turn fast but i couldnt. well.
Your all gay. Go buy Cadillac Deville's if you like easy steering so much. Seriously... like you spend > .1% of the time in your car parallel parking....

I drive/drove a CRX for 2 years with no power steering, that little ****** was fine driving
...Although I do appreciate the creature comforts that PS provides

I'll be doing this mod when my parts arrive.

I parallel park at least 5 times in one day. Easy for you to say if you don't live in a big city.

Pulling the belt is not the right way to do the conversion. When you turn the wheel you are now physically pumping oil back and forth thru the rack hoses and restrictions. The only proper way to do this is to allow the rack to vent or breate so that these restrictions don't exist. That is the whole point of the full meal deal here with the 'T'd' lines or fittings.
You can't compare pulling the belt to the proper conversion unless simply drag racing. Just ain't the same.

The ITR rack has a better ratio, so it should be easier to steer even w/o P/S.

sack- Who can't turn his wheels right now because the rack is open awaiting fittings and parts
not to beat a dead horse, but...
my civic hatch w/o power steering was easy as hell to drive.
ITR w/o P/S is a bitch to drive in a small parking lot, even when it was properly routed using a "loop".
more power to you, if you want better "feel" at the expensive of more effort for daily driving.
