My engine likes the mobil 1
I was getting a slight piston slap when I ran the castrol GTX 10w30 for a few days. I switched over to 5w30 supersyn and it went away.
I didn't think GTX was that bad, but when it was cold or idling for a few minutes it would start to knock. Not a loud knock, but it was noticeable if you stand back 10 feet or so. I'm a perfectionist and I really REALLY hate when something is not right. If switching oil didn't fix the problem, I would probably tear it apart.. (That's the type of person I am...
)
Just thought I'd share my little oil switcheroo story. I like the mobil 1 as of now. Flame me if you want...
Temperature is about 40 degrees in the morning this last few days as well.
Can someone maybe tell me why I am not experiencing the noise anymore? I've heard opposite stories from other people (knocking with mobil, and switching to castrol).
On a side note, those bosch platinum +4's suck ***. I would advise people not to buy those.

ask BrorJace why you should use 10w30 instead of 5w30 with mobil.
you live in seattle so i would believe the same advice applies.
i'll try to find their replies and post them here later...its in that big *** oil thread.

Less viscosity improvers, nearly the same pour point also with most 10w oils.
What oil filter did you use with GTX and now M1? Make sure you use a filter with an anti-drainback valve.

Seems that SuperSyn is overall better than the TriSyn.
Hit up the forums at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com for more info on it. I don't use it, so I do not have all the oil analysis info.
-Aaron, who now uses Shaeffer 10w30.

What is this anti-drainback valve you speak of? I need to switch this filter anyways, so I would appreciate if you could suggest one or help.
Anti-drainback valves do not allow the filter to drain, so the car wont start up dry or without oil when its cold. Check out that site I mentioned above, as there are oil and oil filter forums with more facts than myths.
Filters depend on your budget and purpose. I'm using K&N filters now (good flow, good filtering), but used Purolator PureOnes (not so good flow, great filtering) for many years on my GS-R when I had it. I want high flow for the R for lapping days and weekend fun. I will be using Wal-Mart filters for my '89 Si... $1.97, great filter for the money, still made by Champion Labs (just like K&N and Mobil1). Same oil in both... Shaeffer 10w30.

Schaeffer Oil is not sold in stores. Schaeffer sells directly to fleets and to the US Military among others.
Go to http://www.schaefferoil.com to find out about their Supreme 7000 10W-30. Good stuff.
I have seen oil analysis results of Ford F550s with some serious wear metals present in the sample. After switching to the Schaeffer oil the wear metals decreased. Both oil change intervals were the same.
This was not a one-time occurence. This held true across the board on a large number of F550s used in an electric utility fleet.
Schaeffer Oil is good stuff. So are a lot of other oils.

If or when you have time (and this is for everyone), here is the oil forum I am talking about. http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi Do your research.
Shaeffer oil may not be for everyone, but for the price, it's great insurance for an engine.
