H22 EK-- to EGR or NOT to EGR?
I am currently wiring up my harness and working on the vacuum connections, and am not sure whether or not to use the EGR system. First of all, I don't have it all, so I'd have to buy more stuff. What are the benefits of using it? Will I get better gas milage? My friend says my MPG will go down when cruising by like 5 MPG. Should I wire it up for later? Experiences?
*EDIT* Sorry, I should ad, it's a P13 ECU with an OBD2-1 conversion harness. I can eliminate the second 02, correct? thanks!

I can't really get a clear answer.
People say don't worry about it, but the new emissions laws around me are pretty strict, and I'm pretty sure I would need it to pass. But then again other people say they've passed just fine.
I never heard about this MPG thing though....but if it will lower the MPG by that much, oh man...I'm totally wiring it up! MPG is really important to me.
I've got the h23 and its been diconected for about 3 years with no prob. A friend has the h22 and took out the entire system including the solinoid. Our gas economy hasn't changed much. Definatly not the 5mpg that your friend said.
Overall , I think it would help the life of the engine not breathing in the carbon and soot. Why run garbage into your engine when you spend good money on an airfilter to take it out. When I removed mine the engine ran smoother. The only problem we've got so far is trying to trick the ecu into thinking that the egr is functioning properly. But if you don't mind the check engin light coming on, that won't be an issue.

mitsuman, i told u before, u dont need that egr...hehehe, u WONT have a loss in mpg. it does not affect MPG in anyway. this i know. and in obd1, the 2nd o2 sensor is . it does not exist.. u can plug up the hole in the cat or just leave that sensor there.(smog police will think u have 2 working o2's)
however. if u want to trick the ecu into thinking its working so u wont get a code.. do this.. wire the hole thing up, it will work. when u notice this is working decide if u want it or not.. if u decide u dont want it.. take the egr valve off. and make a plate to go between the valve and the motor.. and screw it all back down. this way the egr will be working. but it will be blocked off and it wont be affecting the motor at all.. understand how this is?....

and it will fail for that (removing the bulb) as well...
If you remove the egr system, and you have to do an emissions test, it's very possible you will fail on high NOx.

HondaZvic,
haha yeah, I know, I just want to be sure its not going to harm my engine or cause me any grief later on, you know? My friend said my MPG's would go down, and that would be bad.. Just making sure. Ok, so if I DO disable I will get a Check engine light? Even with a JDM p13?

yeah.. check engine light will come on with a jdm p13. thats what i have(jdmp13), i havent hooked mine up, and my light comes on after driving for a while.. but it doesnt come on right away. but no, it wont hurt u at all.. like the other guy said, it might make u fail emissions, but i dunnoo...u already changed ur car from obd2 to obd1, so thats even more illegal .. (like me agen) so i dont even worry bout that.. i suggest, if u dont have a hook up on inspection sticker.. get one.. i have one.. makes it all alot easier.
haha yeah, actually around here, we don't have emissions testing so I'm home free.. Cool, I just don't like the idea of not haveing a check engine light.. What if something else goes wrong? How can I read the codes from the ECU with this swap? Is there a method?
huh? the ecu thows all the codes in a certian order... u just chek it every now and then.. to see if it is throwing any additional codes.. u know how to read them rite?. the jdm codes are just the same as the usdm.. except sometimes the jdm's have more. but the additional codes can usually be found on here somewhere.
Well.. Actually, I don't know how to read them...
haha. I'm new to hondas.. this is my first one actually LOL. I am a recend turbo DSM convert. I can read THEIR codes. how do I do it in Civicland? stupid question, I know, but hey, everyone's gotta be told SOMETIME, right?

i've been working on a circuit to try to trick the egr valve---it seems to me it operates depending on the temp of the motor---if its hot valve opens up and recirculate all the gases then shuts off---dats why it takes a while for the ecm to see it. I have tried to pin out the voltage of the circuit but constantly changing---if a comparator circuit could be pu in place it would be great----this circuit will throw in the proper voltage when the ecm looks for it---can't really get rid of it because it works side by side with engine temp also---
i disagree about taking the engine light bulb out----maybe switched in between so you still could check if you have other errors---
the only way rite now is rechipping---if somebody could give me the schematics of the new chip and old chip---i could try to determine the signals it needs and we could end this dillema---
i tried to put a potentiometer and whenever the light came on---i would adjust the pot--sometimes light will clear and sometimes it will stay on so this is not a solution yet

Why would you wire it up if you werent gonna use it? Sounds like a waste of time to wire it up then make a block off plate for it....and then have the CEL come on anyway
Why not just get a GSR ecu that doenst look for the EGR.....then when you go to get you inspection done....the ECU doesnt look for the EGR anyway....and it tells the "aircheck" maching the everything is
I mean call me crazy.....but I think I'm on to somthing

this is way if you dont want to spend money
like new ecu or rechipped---
and you could still have orignal equipment
i was just sharing my idea---dont have to shoot me down---if i get it working---you will be last on my list unless you reconsider.
thanks

the function of the egr valve is to resirculate exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber, this eliminates (nox) by reducing combustion temperatures. high temperatures produce this pollutant of nox.
this only under different driving conditions that the egr functions. if the egr is eliminated high combustion temperatures will be induced which may cause some detonation. this recirculation of ex. gas drops the comb. temp about 300 F.
since this extra gas has mass, it's taking space for oxygen and since you all know fuel and oxygen, the more air you pack in the chamber the more power you get.
hope this answers your Q's

if your prelude is obd1 all you have to do is a make a plate to fit between the egr and the manifold leave everything connected as the ecu only checks that it is opening not if it is flowing anything.I have this done on my lude and they light hasnt come on once and ive had it done for about a month now...

thats what i was talking about.. this way u dont have to buy a gsr ecu and have it re chipped for h22 specs.. this is a cheap way to trick the ecu.. so ur light doesnt come on. thats all.. but hey.. its only egr.. who cares.. emissions stuff sux anyway.. but i didnt know gsr ecus dont have egr.. cool.
man.. how do yall do this copy quote thing? i cant figure this one out hehehe...

I have just the egr valve wired up (no vacuum or the other sensor crap on it) and that plate between the valve and the manifold and the light hardly comes on, but still comes on every once in a while with it blocked off.

Yes, its a JDM P13. Hmm, I don't want my light to come on at all, but I don't wnat to wire up any of that extra crap, if I don't have to... I'm DONE with my wiring unless I have to add EGR stuff..
