B18C5 vs. H22A CX Hatches at the Dragstrip and Auto-X Coming SOON!!!
I'm growing tired of all the B18C5 vs. H22A hype and crap.
Me and another GA guy are going to settle it once and for all with our cars.
In his corner:
1992 CX hatch with H22A swap with i/h/e.
In my corner:
1992 CX hatch with B18C5 swap with i/e and re-chipped ECU.
Both cars are gutted the same, so weight will not be an issue. I hope to add a header by the showdown because I feel that a header is a key part for the Type R motor in order to make good power, just like his H22A has a header to help out.
This is a FRIENDLY challenge that we came up with to have some fun.
We plan on running on Saturday, October 5th at Silver Dollar Dragway in Reynolds, Georgia - just south of Macon.
After the drag we're hoping to auto-X in November at the last Atlanta region SCCA event.
We're getting all the details firmed up, but for now it looks like a go as long as neither of us breaks anything or has any mechanical difficulties we will be able to get this thing going.
What do you guys think?

hmm, that's a tough one. i've seen all motor eg h22's go as low as 11's with little mods. i haven't seen any B18C5'd eg's. i'm hoping the B18C5 will take out the h22, i'm always for the underdog.
good thing i wont be there...wouldnt want to have to show yall up with my full interior, system having, completely stock, big wheel sporting, sohc 97 ex! OHH YEA!
Tom dont want none this!

I'm trying to get us to both run on the MT 20x8'' slicks. i've run on some befroe and so has he, so we both have access to them.
I think same tires is important too, and since we've both ran on those tires I'd be fine with that again.

This sounds like a sweet deal
...too bad the B18C5 is still $2000 more than the H22 so, even if you dust him by a full second (unlikely, I'd assume), the money spent would still be crippling to the average "tuner". I'm excited to see where this goes since I'm thinking of an H22 myself and my best friend (b19civichb) has a B18C-R we're about to drop in his EG.
Wicked. Good luck, gentlemen
EDIT: b18c5-eh2...you play in a band that's opened up for Sevendust? that's ******* sweet! they're one of my favorite bands

Sorry but you're wrong about the price difference.
I paid $4,000.00 for a whole totalled ITR swap while the average ITR swap now goes for $4,800.00.
The Prelude swap goes for $2,400.00. Add more if you want the LSD-equipped tranny version.
Add in the HASport mount kit for $650.00, the 1990-1993 Integra axles for $240.00+ since you don't have cores, and if you're paying for labor expect to pay $300 more or so because shops charge more for the H22A swap.
So we're at $3,500.00 or so at least for the swap, right?
I hope the H22A owners aren't expecting their suspensions to work well with the H22A, so plan on buying suspension too.
I'm not hating, but come on let's get it all out on the table here.

So your saying you use stock axles with your mad tiite itr motor in your EH?
The comment above, "the h22a has good torque, but the tranny ratios suck" care to elaborate more on this? perhaps i missed the technical reasoning as to why the ratio's "suck"
Graphite - who'se hoping the H22a Divic, that can't handle for ish because the H22a weighs 3 1/2 tons, wins.

The axles that come with the Type R swap are the Type R axles. They can be used in the Civic swap.
The Prelude axles that come with the swap CANNOT bne used with a Civic swap. Depending on your mount kit you'll have to either make custom axles or use weaker 1990-1993 Integra axles.
Your post indicates to me that you aren't too familiar with either set-up, eh?
Oh let's not forget there are 2 legs of this fun run.
1. Drag race
2. Auto-X
It seems like you guys are focusing merely on the Drag aspect of things. I'm dissappointed.

You dont need to buy the axles with the h22 swap, that should save you some money. Or just sell the axles to a lude owner and make your money back. Shop around and you can get the swap for 2200... lets say 2500 with lsd. hcp mounts: 450. 250 for axles. Do the swap yourself: free. 3200 total. you can use the 1600 left over for supension and a set of azenis on 15s plus miscellaneous stuff. The itr powered car would still be stock except for the motor if the budget is 4800 total.
Seems to me like the h22 car would win both drag and autox
edit: you guys should run the same tires in autox and drag as well to make it a more fair comparison (no i dont mean use drag slicks for autox
). What is the suspension setup of the two cars?

should definitely be a good match up, although I think you have a little better advantage in the AutoX department Tom. BTW i saw your car at NOPI it's looking good.
bseries is going to own in both drag and road race.
its gonna lap it in a road race but will inch it out in the drag.

might i suggest getting the jdm 4-1 header for the b18c5..it really helps out. i think the auto-x will be more dependant on driver skill..good luck to you both, i can't wait to hear the results.
lol This is just so funny. But to keep on topic. I think a more fairer comparison would be the type R b18 to the Type R h22a. Otherwise the b18c5 would have the advantage..
Sorry guys but the b18c5 is a very capable engine.. A regular h22a should be more compared to the regular b18..
Too bad you live so far, I would love to test my setup against yours..

1. They'll still pay $4800 ++..the average h22 goes for ~2500 shipped.
2. The HCP mount kit + custom (proper) axles+ a/c bracket is running me $800
3. I know for a fact you don't have a stock suspension....why would an h22 swapper have to have one? Why are you figuring suspension costs into the MOTOR costs? They're completely seperate. How much would your 'swap' be if you too figured in the suspension costs? certainly not the MOTOR cost of ~$4800. My suspension setup, brake setup, brand new clutch/flywheel, 4. header, radiator, full exhaust, h22 completely installed etc etc with many many brand new parts is just barely pushing $4900....
Considering the ITR swap is around $4800 for the average guy..and that's before shipping...which swap still has the bang for the buck? The ITR doesn't even have replacement parts added up yet...I doubt you're going to throw the engine in there completely as-is. And you still need to add in suspension, since it seems to be such a key factor around the H-T parts.
Oh well...there will be a never ending debate about h22 vs. b18c5.
IMO, the two shouldn't even really be compared.

Do I need to say who I think will come out on top in both area's.
Tom is an excellent driver (No I'm not leg humping him). I don't think he'll lose. I'll be there to witness both events.

This sounds great. I can't wait to see the results. You need someone to video both the drag and AutoX events so we can all see
. Wish you guys could have done this while we were all up a NOPI. I'd be more interested in the AutoX, i really want to see how a h22 hatch handles 'cause i've heard so much speculation on balance of the after the swap. Good luck Tom, hope it works out and please get someone to video it.

I also want to see what my car will do in the 1/4 mile.
