Default '97 Prelude Tiptronic Transmission problem :(

Hello

There is something wrong with my car. The transmission will not catch gears. In automatic, starting from first gear, when it tries to switch into second, it stays in neutral, revs really high, and will get near redline without switching to second gear.

In tiptronic, the same thing will happen, unless I try switching in really high RPMS. I have to be at about 6,000RPMS to switch from first, to second, to third, to fourth, etc. And it's not a very smooth transition either

Does anyone know what the likely cause could be, and how serious it is, and how much it will probably cost to service? (This just started happening today)

Thanks

The automatics trannys are known to **** up...Take it to your nearest dealership and it should be covered under warranty if you still have it for your car.....

your tranny is goin........i have a 98 lude and my started slippin into 3rd so i had it checked out ....although i already knew thee outcome....went to battle with honda over my warrenty but they wouldnt replace it so i got a level 10 tranny instead of dumpin another honda auto into thee car.....they wanted $5100, mostly in labor for a new one.....so i would check into other alternatives if possible...its still a costly battle...sorry to hear about thee tranny...good luck

Chrono your transmission is bad. Don't know how else to tell ya. Needs to get fixed hopefully if you have warranty they will fix it. But I'm having a huge problem with my warranty not covering my tranny also. Told me was caused by my lack of maintanance records. After we argued for days about how my header caused the bearings to mess up inside the tranny. Love the prelude hate Honda. Prob save up a lil cash and change her to manual.

ahhh, went to battle with honda as well over thee transmission. i took mine to 3 different dealerships and one service advisor (female) had thee nerve to lie over thee phone about thee gearing. that woman shouldn't be allowed to touch a car with her minute knowledge on trannys and functioning. and what exactly do you have done to your car clouddragon, because i find it a bit disturbing that people on hondaprelude.com with forced induction, havent had even thee slightest problems with their auto trannys yet....guess luck isnt on my side.....and i hope your getting yours taken car of soon, mine almost completely locked up in a matter of only a month or two......

Thanks for your help guys though I really hope it's not the transmission itself

I can't afford to replace the whole transmission at this point in time. I have been taking the public transportation to work for the past 3 days and it's really depressing. Here is my car:
It's not that great of an image but I love her. I don't have a warranty for anything on my car because it has a lot of after market parts and I bought it privatley. It only has 80,000km on it however.

*prays* that it's a computer/electrical fault or the atf fluid or something!

btw how do you become a non-trial member?
