98 Accord EX 4 cyl manual - not getting into gear
I have a 98 accord manual and yesterday i was driving down the road slow up to a stop light and all of a sudden the front wheels locked up on me and i came to a screeching halt. I tried to get it back into gear but it wouldn't go into any gear.
I haven't ever put a new clutch in the car of any sort of service with the transmission and it has over 175k miles on it. I called around a bit and everyone wants to look at it before the give me any idea how much it would be. I don't want to put very much money into this thing since it is so old. Any ideas what it might be?

It sounds like the transmission tried to go into two gears at the same time. If that's the case you need a new transmission. You may have gotten lucky and just broken a shift cable, but I doubt it.

If you get a JDM imported trans you should be able to get it for less than $500 with a new clutch kit.

Does the $500 ballpark estimate include labor?
My manual is still doing fine ('99 LX, about 95,000 miles) but it would be good to have a number in the back of my head, we'll be keeping it a long time.

So the shifter is in neutral and won't go into any gear? Does the engine turn over with the clutch in? How does the clutch pedal feel? Is it abnormally soft or stiff? If it turns over and starts, try your best to get it in a gear and then attempt to take off. If your clutch just slips and the car doesn't budge than you locked your transmission up and you'll need a new one. You can find a used transmission for $300-400 on ebay. To change it yourself is not all that difficult, you want to consider it because labor will cost alot of money.

You are in Orlando FL. Craigslist down there is probably filled with Accord Transmission. Recently, I had a scare that my engine was finished (179k miles, but it was just a bolt that was loose), so I was shopping around. You might be able to find one for $150 if you look hard enough, but I am pretty sure that you can find one from $250-400.
Search craigslist. Also check out wwww.car-parts.com
Your car should have TONS of life left in it if you take proper care of it.
I would check the shifter cables, as well as the clutch fluid first. Rock the shifter from side to side and have someone look inside the engine bay and see if the shifter arm on the transmission is moving. Then, put the shifter into gear and out of gear and see if the other transmission shifter arm moves (or it might be up and down in from side to side, and left to right when you move it into and out of gear). I do not remember exactly. After that, check the clutch fluid level. Press the clutch and have someone watch if the clutch lever on the transmission moves when you press the clutch.
I am keeping my f22 engine and stock transmission in my accord because of the cheapness and readily availability of used engines and transmission if I should ever need them. Good luck on your search to getting her back on the road

Re: (professorman)
How fast were you moving when the wheels locked up? Was it as if your clutch didn't disengage and the car tried to stop in a gear as you slowed down or did it just lock up at a higher engine rpm and act like the front brakes locked?

Re: (AccordVT)
here are some answers to your questions, the transmission is stuck in gear the car will not move without the clutch depressed. Moving the gear shift around does not do anything to change the gears. When we came to the screeching halt the car seemed to have engaged into second gear but does not come out of it, it was during a 15-20 mph down shift. I had it at a shop yesterday and they are telling me I need a new clutch and rebuilt transmission, parts and labor for $1750. I am very hesitant to spend that much on this car since the engine is burning oil among many other problems with suspension, brakes and other misc problems.

sounds like a transmission i just had in the shop a few months ago the guy just had a shop put a clutch in.since they were such a great place to spen ur hard earned money they reused his mtf and did not fill it up to the correct level and was shy oh about 1 qt or better and about 100 miles later it locked up the the syncros to the main shaft
i would check the level of the fluid in the transmission or even drain it and see how much fluid is in it. if that's ok theni would disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission and see if you can manually move the shift lever

Re: (dtapia)
well since this thread is about transmissions....my gf's 2000 accord is hard to put into gear...i mean very hard but when it warms up a bit it is a little easier but still way more difficult than it should be. I told her to check her fluid in the res and later today i will look at the shift arm on tranny to see how much it moves when she hits the clutch....would like to hear some other possibilities also.....maybe cable as suggested above?

Re: (zx12ryder)
well as i knew some more info would be released after the intial questioning on her vehicle....she also said that first gear is the hardest to get into...extremely difficult. also....she said when sitting still as soon as she releases the brake it starts creeping forward....and thats on level ground with clutch pedal pressed...?!.....throw out bearing?...faulty slave cylinder?...what do you think?

Re: (zx12ryder)
Id suspect the slave. Didnt the 98-00 model years have a recall on the master and slave cylinders? Might wanna check into that at the dealer

I just bought a '99 accord coupe w/ manual tranny. 115k miles on it... how do I know if the recall swap has been done on it? Do the master or slave cylinders look any different?
If they haven't been swapped, can I just take it to a dealer and they do it for free?
