adjustable cam gears and base timing
so this motor I picked up has adjustable cam gears. it looks like the cams (center section of the cam gear) are adjusted about 1 or 2 degrees toward the front of the car (advanced?). how does that effect the base timing of the motor? If I set the base timing at 18deg, does that mean the timing is really advanced 19 or 20 degrees? this is also on a stock ECU which I dont think matters but just more info for ya.
well it just means that the cams are advanced the bas timing would be whatever u set it to. usually without a ecu tune on a stock ecu u should advance the intake cam by 1 degree and retard the exhuast cam by 1 degree. u wont really notice any big power gains since the car is not tuned are everything else is stock.
so good luck with that.

i wouldn't adjust them too much unless you've measured valve-to-valve clearance. there's a chance that you can smack the valves together if you play with the gears too much...
Why not just loosen the cam gears, set them to zero, check TDC and run that way? Its what I've always done before getting tuned with Jeff with my Toda adjustables and last time he didn't even change anything at all.

I "might" have a set laying around. I'll check the shop and let ya know.
