Sounds like air trapped in the system. You might try a radiator funnel (about $15 at the parts store) It goes on the filler neck in place of the cap. It allows air to burp out and replaces it with coolant. Make sure your heater is switched on, let it get good and warm through a couple cooling fan cycles, then let it cool with the funnel in place. Good luck.

Good bet you have a bad headgasket. The antifreeze blowing all over the transmission is a dead giveaway. I've fixed 5 Civics with the same symtoms as yours and they all had a bad headgasket.

You wont see smoke out of the exhaust, or antifreeze in the oil. You may have a cleaner sparkplug than the other three if your looking for a quick check.

So what if you have checked all 4 spark plugs and no liquid anywhere.. Took out heater core as well as thermostat. I have changed over flow, radiator cap, water pump, and I took the thermostat out after replacing it three times. I have burned it and flushed everytime. When I changed the water pump I had the top part of the motor off and everything is like brand new still (replaced motor less than a hear ago).

A bad radiator cap will allow coolant into the reservoir and it's not supposed to be pressurized , Air pockets in the 1.7 can be a pain too , I guess you could pull the hose at the head above the thermostat and put the hose into a jug of coolant , put a hose on the bare nipple and use a shop vac to draw out the air , don't let the jug go empty . I had a beater civic that had goop in the radiator cap and I drove it for a few years till the head gasket finally gave out , It still ran though . I learned a lot about over heating in the 1.7 .
