Default DIY Throttle Body Cutout -A Cheap Alternative

It's always bothered me that my exhaust was 2 1/4" (Thermal Racing) and I ran a 4-1 header w/ 2.5" collector with a test pipe that coned down to make the transition. I saw that I had 2 options: E-Cutout or full 2.5" exhaust, both costing way more than I wanted to spend.

So I did some searching and stumbled upon what seemed to be a ghetto rigged rendition of a $200 E-Cutout, so I ran with the idea.

Parts Used w/ Prices
Throttle Body from Ford Crown Victoria pulled from junk yard-$15
2.5" Piping from Pep Boys- $10
Manual Choke kit from Pep Boys- $10
Using Friend's Mig Welder and Angle Grinder-Beer and Pizza
Total- $35ish

The Crown Vic TB measures 2.75" ID and the biggest pipe they had at pep boys was 2.5" but the good thing is that the pipe fits inside PERFECTLY and goes in deep enough to cover the bypass port, (much like the idle air control valve on our TB's). The only thing holding the TB to the pipe are 2 self tap screws just to keep it on, but nothing else was used to make a better seal because it's simply not needed.

Things I would do differently:
Use a better grade pipe because the mig was burning right through it even on the lowest setting, so the weld job ended up looking like **** because we had to build up the welds so they mated to cheap pep boys pipe. Though it does look like hell, it functions well enough and also has no leaks, besides no-one is gonna see it anyway

Least to say I've had it on the car for 3 weeks now and love it, no leaks so far, and it sounds rediculous and baffles a lot of people till they understand what's going on.

Ask questions if you have any. Enjoy

Loud as hell!! Basically sounds like open header, but maybe a couple decibles quieter...

I don't understand how it's even possible to make "welds" like that. Honestly, I don't know how to screw up that badly. I remember the first day I bought a POS flux-cored welder and plugged it in and had no idea what the hell I was doing. I could at least still make a line of weld. Geez. Is your welder broken? What is that mess? What am I even looking at?

Next version should be an electric one. Using a cheap 15lb door popper solenoid with a pushbutton on the dash

Cool as hell, I'm gonna show my brother this. He was looking for a cheaper solution for cutouts.

That looks good but to give a better idea for the next time go make a plate for the throttle to bolt to and then the tube to the side its less noise and seals great, my buddy uses this in his turbo mirage and has a civic throttle body (Honda WANABE)

dude, what did i say? The mig burned right throught the shitty pipe from pep boys on the lowest setting so we had to weld on top of welds to build up enough so that it would seal. Even after doing it once there was only maybe 8 pinholes that didnt seal all the way...trust me, with better pipe the weld would've looked wayyyy nicer, but like i said, no appearance/cosmetic judges will be crawling underneath my car any time soon...maybe a nhra tech guy though, lol

I'm sorry, is this to make it quieter? You must've gotten the impression that I didn't wanna make kitten's ears bleed, and besides the seal is perfect as is (i got lucky) and its a much simpler setup than cutting a steel plate, drilling, etc. etc....I don't even wanna think about what that weld would've looked like!

Thanks for the positive feedback guys

man those welds do look f'd up, but hey it works. Just make sure you don't lose everything when it eventually does fall off. When you said the lowest setting on the welder were you referring to the voltage or wfs. Also what gauge was the pipe from pep boys.

Don't know and don't know... I'm guessing voltage...the **** on the mig was on the lowest setting....my friend did all the welding since he had all the experience (that sounds funny considering the pictures haha), and the pipe was tinny, like it would flex pretty easily and was no where near the quality of my exhaust...eff pep boys....their pipe is for clamping, not welding but oh well.... oh, and the cable has already shown to be strong enough to drag the thing down the road if and when it breaks off....but lets all say a silent prayer that that doesnt happen anytime soon

Had to share this with you guys cuz if you're like me, you like shooting flames too haha...

So I remounted my nitrous bottle and had to get my fix, so I opened up the exhaust and sprayed it to all hell for the first time since the cutout...After every shift it shot a blue flame bright enough (and big enough) to light up the whole bottom of my car and the passing lane! It was so funny/badass. Ok, end of rant

Do it. Be careful streetracing though.
