Balancer Shaft Oil Seal?
Where/What is this? I just found a recall on my car and I think this may be my oil leak...I'm convinced it's not my oil pan gasket...but what would the symptons of the faulty seal be?
I was looking at this pick of the crankshaft but I can't find it...

and you had to ask this when i gave my book back to my machine shop! I believe the balancer shaft is 11/12. im not 100% sure though...

The front shaft is 12...I'm trying to figure out where this seal is...it must be on the block wherethe shaft meets the block...like 18,19,20?

only the front balancer shaft has a seal. it's located in the oil pump. in this pic it's between #12 and #13.
yeah oil would leak right on the side of the motor near the timing belt. it would prolly leak through the lower cover and come out near the oil pan. so it is possible to confuse that with an oil pan leak.
The problem is with the seal coming out of the block from high oil pressure. This is most common under high loads or during warm up. If the seal comes out then a total loss of engine oil can occur. Honda make a "new" special retainer that holds the seal in place.

I put the seal retainer on while my H22a was on a stand, while its in the car it must be a bitch to do, but so is a H22a timing belt. The balancer shaft oil seal problem is a recall, free fix if you dont want to be bothered doing it yourself. If you have the motor out it takes about 15 seconds to do.
yes it's a canadian recall too...
i did mine at Formula Honda...it's free...but takes like 8 hours to do
i'm surprised you never got a letter from Honda about it...i did this almost 2 years ago

I just got a card yesterday about this. My car is in pieces right now so it will be easy to replace, especially after reading this thread
if that seal pops off, like it did in my engine, there may be some damage already to the engine.mine popped off and oil went eveywhere in my engine bay.

cylinders were scrored very bad.luckily nothing happened to the crank or bearings, but i changed them anyway. The seal popped off on my way homefrom work.once i turned the corner to my house, the engine lost power, smelled very much like burned oil, very quiet exhaust....then the oil light turned on once i pulled up into the driveway.

So it's fixed now ..and Honda could not find any evidence of my previous oil leak!!! WTF they told me my oil pan gasket was leaking before....
So now I have to come back in 1000 kms to look at oil consumption. Maybe I can get a new engine if it's bad hehe...

its possible, ive heard of many people having to get there engine changed because of high oil consumption. My buddy works for honda,he knows the dirty details

had to do something with the engines burning oil cuz of the piston rings or the cylinders...i dont know the finer details, but it was quicker and cheaper for honda to get a new engine or block in some peoples cars.i know it was some of the sh blocks 97 and after. If the engine was burning more oil than "normal" then you might have one of the bad blocks.

As for oil consumption...people have gotten new engines....but Honda has to REALLY test it. They give you their own "Honda" oil, put a seal on your oil plug so you can't tamper with it, and measure your oil every 1000 kms. If it's more than 1.5L per 1000kms, you MIGHT get a new engine/block
