weird noise. possibly the diff???
Well I have a 2001 integra type R. the car and transmission only have 40,000 miles on them (motor has only 2000, just rebuilt). car started making a clicking noise, that progressively worsened rather quickly. drivers side wheel bearing had a little play so i replaced it and that didn't solve the problem. axle looked good, but i replaced that with a brand new one, and that did not solve the problem.
definately not the motor, because the noise still persists when i shut the motor off, and let the car free wheel. Sounds like it is coming from the left side of the car but it is hard to tell.
does anyone have any way i can distinguish whether it is the differential or something else, or any other possibilities.
thanks in advance

Sounds like them same problem I'm having man. I've taken it to two shops both told me different things. I changed tranny fluid, didn't help at all. New axles, no help. I'm leaning towards the lsd. Do you only hear it when you're turning?
thanks maybe i will try the motor rebuild thread.
I hear the noise when i go in a straight line as well. transmission fluid is brand new. im going to drain the transmission oil and inspect for metal shavings. only other possibility besides the LSD i can think of is maybe the intermediate shaft. spins good by hand though.
it seemed to get worse after i ripped around a few corners. thanks for your answer this is really frustrating.

this is weird. My car is doing the same crap. I just in stalled a new set of 2.9 DSS axles in and my car is doing the same thing as you're describing. I went to the track last night and my wife said she could her some poppingnoise when i pulled in from tech. And tonight i heard it for myself while turning sharp to the right in Walley World. I'm goin to have to inspec this tomorrow. Hopefully its not the diff!! And not the axles either!! Have you guys figured whats up with your cars??
I noticed my lower ball join is leaking a little.

i wouldn't think it could be the ball joint. my car does it when i am going straight as well and that wouldn't be moving. i tried asking in another tech forum, but got no response thus far.
I guess my next option is to take it to a shop. maybe i can pay them to diagnose it because i sure cant afford to have them fix it. i actually wanted to sell the car, but i cant if it is making this noise. Mine got worse quick, after i took a hard turn. pretty odd. i have only replaced wheel bearing and axle on the driver side. possibly the other side i guess.
please do let me know if either of you guys figure anything out

this is what i was told to do in the tech thread. not a bad idea! I am going to try this in two weeks, as soon as finals are over. i can't deal with this car anymore right now.
"put the car properly on jack stands and run it...while under the vehicle listen for the noise with a mechanics stethoscope or pry bar...then get back to us"

Those are symptoms of a bad CV joint. COULD possibly be a lower ball joint problem, but your description points towards a CV...

Will be do wrench turning tomorrow. Will let you guys know whats up with my situation. I still say its the axle. I didnt have this popping/clunk noise until i changd to the DSS axles. But it could just be a bad joint in the axle.
Its either the axles, diff or wheel bearings.
Theres nothing else that I know of. In the helms there is a way to check the diff. not sure if this will help you but its one more idea.
